He added that while India is making leaps of progress with 5G rollout and applications, the goal is that the country takes a leadership stance when it comes to 6G services and technology.
“When we talk about (India becoming) a USD 5 trillion economy, 5G will have the biggest contribution to it. In fact, globally 5G is expected to drive a USD 2.2 trillion economy by 2030, and to be part of this growth, we want to make 5G available to every Indian at affordable rates,” Chauhan said while delivering his address at the ET Telecom 5G Congress.
Affordable access to 5G will help with last mile connectivity and digital inclusion in the country and 5G will play a role in facilitating both, he added.
To further include over 600, 000 villages in the country on the digital map, the government has worked with private companies to lay down 30 lakh kilometres of optical fibre in the country, Chauhan said.
“Wherever access to technology is available, transparent governance and democracy will also follow. By enabling last mile connectivity, we are enabling citizens in these areas to hold the authorities accountable,” he added.
On the importance of technology, he reiterated that while it holds a lot of power, it is useful only when used to empower the citizens to achieve a better ease of living.
“The policy (of this government) has been centered around – transform, reform, and perform. And this has been instrumental in executing the 5G auctions in a transparent manner,” he said.
He added that India’s pace of 5G rollout also has been impressive with 125 cities being covered under the new technology in a matter of 120 days which is “something even countries like the US have not achieved”.
Chauhan also pointed out that India is the only nation to start work on 6G within six months of 5G launch. A day earlier, union minister for communications Ashwini Vaishnaw had informed the press that India has already obtained 127 patents related to 6G technology and applications.
