According to Reliance Industries Limited (RIL)’s investor presentation for Q1FY24, Jio has covered over 90% of census towns with its 5G network.
The telecom operator is now aiming to conclude its 5G rollout ahead of its earlier target of December 2023.
“Jio continues to make rapid progress in rolling out its True5G network. Jio is on track to complete pan India 5G rollout before December 2023. The new JioBharat phone is another innovation by Jio combining network and device capabilities to help accelerate ‘2G-mukt Bharat’ vision and democratize internet,” Akash M Ambani, chairman, Reliance Jio, said in a statement.
Jio, and rival Bharti Airtel began their 5G network rollouts in October 2022, and have ramped up the pace this year. In fact, the accelerated pace of 5G deployments has helped the telecom companies’ gear partners Nokia and Ericsson log a record second quarter (Q2) in India.
Nokia India reported a 333% year-over-year (355% in constant currency) rise in its net sales in Q2, while its Swedish rival Ericsson claimed it has a “leading market share” in the country where it saw strong execution with record built-outs in India.
“355% growth is not something that you should expect to continue forever. It has been an incredible growth period in India. Of course, the investments continue but we would expect there to be the moderation in the second half. And the overall result, I guess, will be that 2023 will be an exceptional year in India for sure,” Nokia President & CEO Pekka Lundmark said in an earnings call with analysts.
Lundmark however expects the growth to normalise in 2024.
“...If you compare this to the past, we have taken market share because we broke into big time into Reliance Jio which was 100% Samsung previously. So despite the fact that there will, of course, be normalization in 2024, we believe that in a way the new normal, the new run rate that we will see for our business is India will be clearly higher than what was the case before,” he said.
“Sales growth in India partly offset the expected softening we saw in other markets, notably in North America, where build-out pace moderated and customer inventory levels were reduced,” Ericsson CEO Borje Ekholm has said.
As per the presentation, Jio’s fixed wireless access (FWA) AirFiber device will support network Radio Access Network (RAN) slicing. The telco has also upgraded its JioFiber home gateway to Wi-Fi 6 to provide better indoor coverage with enhanced speeds.
Further, Jio AirFiber will come with a single sign-on method for a better first-time login experience to STB and all apps. Jio said all 16 application builds currently available on Fiber are now also available on AirFiber.
It is to be noted that Jio is targeting 100 million premises with its FWA solution.
