NEW DELHI: India's largest passenger car maker Maruti Suzuki has braced itself to accelerate digital transformation around the fifth generation technologies (5G) and is currently running proof of concepts with telecom operators to explore 5G use cases such as smart factories. The company, however, said that the adoption of 5G will also depend on technical feasibility and commercial viabilities of practical use cases, and it will accordingly finalise its roadmap.

"We are doing POCs with few partners regarding the application of 5G in the production area for the acquisition of data at high speed from smart machines to drive various
IoT, analytics and AI use cases", Shashank Srivastava, senior executive officer of marketing and sales Maruti Suzuki told ETTelecom in an exclusive interaction.

Without naming the partners, Srivastava said the company is in the initial stages of trials and proof of concepts around 5G. He said that with the help of 5G technologies like IoT, Maruti has a vision to enable smart factory capabilities by 2025.

Indian telecom operators like Bharti Airtel and Jio are looking to tap India's 5G private network opportunity and are eyeing the automobile sector. Airtel, for instance, recently deployed a
private 5G network at Mahindra’s Chakan manufacturing facility under a strategic partnership with Tech Mahindra. Mahindra’s Chakan facility has become India’s first 5G-enabled automobile manufacturing unit.

Financial Express reported that Reliance Jio is reportedly discussing with Elon Musk’s Tesla to build a captive private network for the electric vehicle (EV) company. It, however, added that the discussions are currently preliminary and may progress further only if Tesla “firms up” its plans for setting up a manufacturing unit in India.

Srivastava said Maruti had extensively used robotic process automation (RPA) across production, finance, HR, and quality to automate manual, repetitive processes and zero human errors.

"We have multiple RPA bots deployed in various areas across the company, ranging from production, finance, HR, and Quality. It has helped automate manual, repetitive processes leading to zero human errors and 24x7 uptime. We are adopting more digital workers in the company's workforce for handling process-centric tasks," he added.

When Indian enterprises scrabble for use cases in 5G technologies, Maruti has several use cases leveraging AR/VR and AI technologies. "We have many use cases leveraging AR/VR and AI technologies. We launched Nexaverse and Arenaverse for interactive augmented reality-based customer experience for car models, created digital avatars of salespeople on brand websites, applied AI for automating customer feedback calls, queries etc.," the senior executive pointed out.

Applying 5G to connect shop floor machines, the automaker said it is leveraging IoT for various operations like preventive maintenance and real-time quality monitoring.

The senior official feels that globally, many auto companies are using 5G technologies like AI, virtual reality (VR), and IoT in their processes, and some of them can be applied in India for use cases in the auto sector.

"5G can accelerate the development and adoption of AI and AR-VR use cases, e.g. autonomous vehicle development, EV ecosystem, vehicle-to-vehicle connectivity, smart factory, connected global supply chain management, conversational AI for customer experience management etc.," he remarked.

A KPMG report says more than 85% of enterprises across multiple sectors expect up to 20 % ROI on various 5G/ industry 4.0 use-cases ranging from non-time critical communication, connected goods, seamless ecosystem communication, remote operations and time-critical communications. The expectation increases within the next two-to-five-year period. As 5G is substantiated with auxiliary technologies such as AI/ML, blockchain and AR/VR, the returns are expected to increase.
