BENGALURU: Infosys<\/a> is seeking the expertise of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc<\/a>), and IIT Bombay<\/a>, to understand the commercial viability of growing bamboo, the plantation of which it has raised on a 35-acre plantation in Bengaluru's Sarjapur. The software giant has grown about 32,000 bamboo trees of Bheema variety, supplied by N Barathi, an agri-scientist and founder of Growmore Biotech, based at Hosur, Tamil Nadu.

\n\"We need the expert validation on the commercial viability of using bamboo for gasification, conversion into charcoal, power generation, and for producing ethanol. That is why we have grown so many trees on a commercial scale, and not in lab conditions,\" Infosys Executive Vice President Ramadas Kamath told ET.

Infosys, according to Kamath, began growing Bheema in January 2013, after learning that it can absorb nine times more carbon<\/a> than a normal bamboo tree.

\n\"We want IISc and IIT to help document the whole process so that we can take our experiment beyond Infosys, and pass on the knowledge we gained so far for the benefit of society . Bheema variety grows well along the course of large-drains or rivers,\" he said. Many farmer groups, government officials, and university scholars have visited our bamboo plantation, he added.

\nAccording to Barathi, bamboo can be used for making paper, furniture, ethanol and other valueadded products. Gasification of bamboo will produce power as a main product and charcoal as a byproduct. The charcoal can be used for water purification purposes as well as fuel in thermal plants.

\nBarathi said he discovered the variety (later named by him as Bheema) in the Northeast region in 2002, and found that it grows well in South India. \"It is originally a wild variety, but I have domesticated it, and today it can yield 40 tonnes per acre per year. Half of this bamboo tree is composed of carbon deposit.While per capita carbon dioxide (CO2) emission is 1400 kg, five Bheema bamboos can absorb as much as 1600 kg of CO2,\" he said.

\nHe added that he has not genetically modified the Bheema variety. \"It is not a patented product. I have developed the agronomy for bamboo,\" Barathi said.
