Bengaluru: As Infosys braces for a top leadership transition with long-time employee and chief operating officer (COO) UB Pravin Rao retiring later this month, it has decided not to find a replacement but rather distribute his responsibilities between a handful of top executives including its two presidents in the US and UK.

A recent mail from CEO
Salil Parekh to the leadership of the country’s second-largest IT services company detailed additional responsibilities that will be handled by presidents Ravi Kumar and Mohit Joshi, CFO Nilanjan Roy, executive vice presidents and some senior vice presidents as well.

Infosys’ decision to scrap the COO position was first reported by MoneyControl on Saturday. People in the know of the decision confirmed to ET the distribution of additional responsibilities to the company’s other top leaders, though Infosys did not respond to a detailed mail from ET.

Kumar, who is also deputy COO, will take on the additional responsibilities of immigration, cyber security, procurement and the India business unit. Joshi, who heads the company’s financial services and healthcare businesses, will additionally manage information systems and computers and communications.

Other executives with additional responsibilities include EVP Karmesh Vaswani who will manage quality; CFO Nilanjan Roy will now manage infrastructure, facilities, physical security; Group HR head Krish Shankar will also be in charge of talent acquisition.

Infosys’ general counsel Inderpreet Sawhney will be in charge of privacy and data protection, while Rafee Tarafdar, who heads the company's strategic technology group will be redesignated as CTO and will report to Kumar.

“Usually organisations have a structure that suits their needs at any given point of time and their responsibilities to people. For the length and breadth of Infosys, the roles of leadership are fairly well defined and could be easily separated further,” said Shriram Subramanian, founder and MD at InGovern Research.

Subramanian added that the additional responsibilities for Infosys leaders “could be temporary or it could be ever-changing” with this being dependent on each individual company and where they are currently in their life stage.

For Infosys, which has several business verticals that themselves drive more than $1 billion in revenues, they could start acting as different units with separate P&Ls, but what mattered the most, Subramanian said, was a smooth transition.

Infosys, like its crosstown peer
Wipro which brought in a new CEO last year, has been simplifying its leadership structure in an attempt to be more agile at a time when demand for large-scale transformation services has been in high demand due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Rao, who has held several positions at Infosys since joining the company in 1986 and even served as the company’s Interim CEO when Vishal Sikka stepped down from the role after a long-drawn battle between the company’s promoters and board, announced his retirement at the company’s quarterly earnings call in October.

Subramanian said that most technology companies end up having a matrix structure, where the technology owners are horizontals and the domain-related and account teams are all verticals, adding that with the US driving 70% of revenues for IT services companies, it was easy to virtualise businesses there and in Europe.

However, business units in India, the Middle East and Africa which still account for a relatively smaller share of revenues for IT services firms, could get clubbed and remain as horizontals, he added.
