Bharti lost 3.3%, while Idea shed 5.1% at the end of Wednesday's trading on the bourses.

Despite improving profitability, investors are worried over the rising debt and higher requirement of funds to service it. Telecom operators bid aggressively during the recently-concluded spectrum auctions.

Bharti will shell out 29,130 crore and Idea will pay 30,100 crore to secure air waves in their respective circles. Of this amount, 25-33% was to be paid in 10 days after the close of auction on March 25, 2015.

Idea Cellular reported an increase of 1,800 crore in the consolidated net debt at 13,800 crore at the end of the March 2015 quarter on account of upfront portion of the auction payment. A report by Motilal Oswal Securities mentioned that the net debt relative to earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) of Idea is expected to increase to 2.9 in FY16 from 1.3 in FY15.

For Bharti, net interest, as a proportion of consolidated earnings before interest and tax (EBIT), shot to 43.2% in the fourth quarter from 28% a year ago.

Telcos will have to show a sustained growth in revenue and improve operating efficiency to be able to report a healthy growth in the net profit after servicing their growing debt. The traction in data traffic over the past few quarters is a positive sign. The proportion of data related revenue in total sales stands at over 17% for each of Bharti and Idea.

Data ARPU rose by 32.3% for Bharti and 44.2% for Idea during the March 2015 quarter from the year ago.

/news/industry/airtel-says-voice-services-in-india-face-sustained-pressure-to-invest-3-billion/47099559
Top publicly listed telecom operators, including Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular reported better profitability and improved data traffic for the March 2015 quarter.
["industry","Airtel","financial results","idea","debt","ET Intelligence Group
industry/investors-wary-of-indian-telcos-high-debt-despite-better-q4-show"}}" data-authors="[" "]" data-category-name="Industry" data-category_id="18" data-date="2015-04-29" data-index="article_1">
