NEW DELHI: Vodafone India is planning to bring some global IoT or Internet of Things use cases to the country to further grow its enterprise business. In an interaction with ET’s Danish Khan, Nick Gliddon, Director at Vodafone Business Services talks about how the Internet of Things is becoming the fastest growing segment of its enterprise business.

How big is Vodafone's focus on the IoT segment in India?

India is witnessing a rapid upsurge in the demand for emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, IoT, Cloud, and Analytics, etc. Vodafone is making in-roads into multiple aspects of our lives and companies are cashing in on this opportunity to engage with consumers through newer models of technology delivery. IoT technologies are now beginning to reach critical mass in the enterprise and are also a core focus of research and development for a wide range of consumer technology companies.

For Vodafone, Internet of Things is one of the fastest growing segments of our enterprise business in India. With over 66 million IoT connections across the world, it has been recognised by Gartner as a ‘Leader’ in its Magic Quadrant for Managed M2M Services, Worldwide 2017, for the fourth consecutive year and as ‘The Consistent Global Leader’ in IoT services by Machina Research in its 2016 IoT Communications Service Provider Benchmarking report.

We feel that 21st century is the ‘India Century’ and to realize its potential to the fullest, Vodafone is making a transition from providing just basic mobile connectivity to truly partner enterprises in their digital journey. We have more than 20 years’ experience in the IoT space, and our solutions span verticals ranging from manufacturing, construction, and logistics to automotives, healthcare, retail and banking.

Reliance Jio has already launched its narrowband IoT network, while other is preparing to launch it. Does Vodafone plan to launch its own IoT network?

Vodafone has already launched Narrowband IoT in select European markets and is evaluating it for the Indian market as well.

How Vodafone's IoT operations in developed European countries would help it in India? Is it planning to roll out some global IoT uses cases in India as well?

As a global leader in IoT, Vodafone has worked with several enterprises on myriad use cases for IoT and these capabilities reflect in the solutions we provide in India. The evolution of our IoT solutions in India has been an exciting journey for us and we can now deliver end-to-end solutions for the most demanding enterprise customers. We call this approach SuperIoT – a comprehensive set of communication solutions that span the whole deployment stack, right from the device and connectivity to data platform and application development.

As we continue to innovate in this space, we always seek to bring in global use cases that can deliver tangible business impact for our customers. We are keenly evaluating use cases for sectors like automotives, manufacturing, healthcare, retail and smart cities, and will look at building those in India.

How big is the revenue opportunity for a Telco in the IoT segment?

India is fast moving towards becoming a digital economy, with the rising adoption of technologies like Cloud, IoT, Industrial IoT (IIoT), wearable technology, and artificial intelligence. These provide better connectivity, coverage and real-time monitoring and tracking of services and systems across diverse industry verticals, thereby reducing operational and manpower costs. The growth of such technologies is also being propelled by the increasing focus on ambitious government projects like smart cities.

Telcos have a critical role to play in the enterprise value chain, which is expected to grow at a healthy pace in the next 5 years. Considering the cut-throat competition in the Indian telecom industry, IoT services provide tremendous opportunities for business and revenue growth for telcos. To gain a competitive edge, telcos must up their ante by providing more than just connectivity, and looking at the bigger picture with a transformational business model. Partnerships, developing user-friendly platforms, providing enhanced services, and adopting a consultative approach to enterprises for embracing IoT should be the focus areas for telcos to cash in on the IoT opportunity effectively.

What role a telco can play in enabling the IoT segment in the country?

The success of emerging technologies like IoT depends on the reliability and strength of a telecom network. Driven by the increasing adoption of digital, rapid smartphone penetration, improved data and broadband connectivity and rising awareness of evolving technologies, India is becoming the fastest growing telecom market, providing numerous opportunities in the IoT space to both global and domestic players.

As a leading telco in the world, we have more than 86% coverage with fall back from 4G to 3G to 2G. Our unique Managed IoT Connectivity Platform adds an extra layer of security to the solution. The ability to safely store and access the data generated by IoT – to provide robust cloud capabilities in addition to stable, secure connectivity and to deliver it on scale - that’s what’s truly needed to deliver the value and insight that customers are looking for from IoT.

How focused is Vodafone on the industrial IoT space in India? Or, would it plan to focus on the consumer IoT segment?

The benefits of connected technology are gradually seeping into the industrial sector, with IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) becoming the buzzword for everyone associated with the construction and manufacturing sectors. Vodafone is at the forefront of these advances, having developed Industry 4.0 solutions for both smart buildings and factories. We are also closely working with enterprises in the logistics, automotives, healthcare and utilities industries to enable them to reap the benefits of IoT.

Consumer IoT space is evolving thanks to increasing awareness about the convenience and simplicity of connected devices. Smart kitchens, home devices, asset tracking apps and people safety solutions are coming to the forefront as people are increasingly participating in the adoption of these. With the confluence of big trends like increased connectivity, ubiquity of devices, omnipresence of sensors, and bigger usage of big data and analytics, the time is ripe for IoT to start making its impact felt across sectors.

How important is collaboration to be successful in the IoT space? What sort of partners does Vodafone work in India for IoT services?

IoT requires building an eco-system and working with partners to bring the right solution to the table. We currently have strong partner relationships with over 50 leading companies across the IoT value chain, from hardware manufacturers, through software & services developers, to Systems Integrators and Communications re-sellers. We are engaged in a structured way in a global partner ecosystem that enables us to gain wider access to IoT opportunities, ensuring maximum benefit for Vodafone, our Partners, and our customers.

Globally, Vodafone’s acquisition of Cobra Automotive Technologies in 2014 helped us expand our automotive capabilities and leapfrog into the future of connected cars. In India, we deployed these innovative solutions for Mahindra and JCB to make these ‘things’ perform more efficiently.

Besides, we also partner start-ups in their growth journey and empower them with our comprehensive suite of solutions across mobility, IoT, Cloud, Analytics and other connectivity solutions. As a preferred partner of choice for leading startups and incubators like Ola, Zomato and OYO Rooms, we have strengthened our commitment to the Startup India program to create an ecosystem for sharing best practices and forming synergies with this growing community.

Is smart city a potential growth area for Vodafone's IoT business?

Smart cities are necessary to adapt to the demands of urban growth. IoT technology lies at the heart of a smart city, improving the lives of the citizens within it. An IoT-enabled smart city can reroute traffic around congestion in real time, automatically schedule repairs for failed infrastructure like street lighting or bridges, and intelligently manage energy use and pollution right across the built environment. It can protect citizens and businesses from crime more effectively, and safeguard vulnerable citizens in their homes.

From IoT-enabled parking capabilities in Germany to some of the smart city developments we have done in Pune and Kolkata, we have developed tremendous understanding of how IoT might help in traffic management. Smart Cities also have requirements for waste management and our intelligent solutions help the garbage collections team receive alerts automatically when the waste bins are full, thus optimizing their efficiency and productivity.

Vodafone marries its global best practices with the rich local knowledge to support the government and partners alike in creating future-ready cities that provide better infrastructure for delivering health & education related services and overall improved quality of life to urban citizens.

How big is the team in India to focus on IoT as an enterprise vertical?

We have a dedicated team of technology experts who help provide the most advanced solutions catering to the specific needs of enterprises. By bringing together the best expertise of both technology and business across industries, we deliver intelligent communication solutions on a SuperIoT platform, backed by state-of-the-art technology and a best-in-class, cost-effective back-end system.

Nick Gliddon, Director at Vodafone Business Services talks about how the Internet of Things is becoming the fastest growing segment of its enterprise business.
telecomnews/iot-technologies-beginning-to-reach-critical-mass-in-enterprise-space-vodafone-indias-nick-gliddon
["Vodafone","Enterprise Services","smart cities","Nick Gliddon","IoT","Interviews
telecomnews/iot-technologies-beginning-to-reach-critical-mass-in-enterprise-space-vodafone-indias-nick-gliddon"}}" data-authors="[" danish khan"]" data-category-name="" data-category_id="" data-date="2018-04-17" data-index="article_1">
