IT service providers such as Tata Consultancy Services, HCL Technologies, Cognizant and Infosys are carving out specific revenue units corresponding to their cloud hyperscale partners like Google, Azure and AWS as they sign more cloud migration and consulting deals.
Most large IT service providers including Wipro, HCL Technologies and Tech Mahindra, which have signed on a number of partnerships with cloud partners in the past few quarters, are now doubling down on revenue from specific practices in their cloud units.
TCS, India’s largest software exporter, has streamlined its cloud practice into five strategic units – Amazon Web Services, Google, Azure, its own private cloud arm and a cloud consulting unit. Individual vice presidents head these units and are responsible for their revenue performance.
Krishnan Ramanujam, president of business and technology services at TCS, said the company is looking to increase the practice and drive revenue growth from each cloud platform.
“The cloud platforms are in that stage where they have a very basic foundation, which is very strong in terms of the sophistication… but from contextualising it to an industry level in a company, they are nowhere near that. And that is where we can play a very big part because of our industry knowledge and expertise,” said Ramanujam.
Cognizant CEO Brian Humphries told analysts at the company’s third quarter results conference late last month that the company had ramped up its cloud partnerships with all three hyperscalers in the past six months.
“We have further strengthened our partnership commitment to all three leading hyperscale providers, announcing the formation of dedicated business groups for both Microsoft and AWS, and investing to enhance our Google Cloud credentials. Whatever approach a client wants to take to become a modern business, our portfolio will add multiple onlaps,” said Humphries.
Infosys has been partnering all three cloud platforms and has seen an increase in revenue from the cloud unit since last year. The company announced a dedicated cloud services brand called Cobalt recently.
Ravi Kumar S, deputy chief operating officer at Infosys, said at an analyst conference last week that the Cobalt ‘network’ involved hyperscalers, private cloud players, SaaS-based players and a large number of new-age, cloud innovation companies.
CEO Salil Parkeh said at the same conference, “The idea for Cobalt is to help our clients go faster in their cloud journey, and to do it with less risk because we have a lot of things that have been tried and tested. Today, we already have 200 industry solutions and 15,000 cloud assets that form a part of Cobalt.”
Analysts said cloud providers would heavily rely on the help of system integrators (SIs) to double down on the enterprise cloud market and are offering significant incentives to Indian SIs to aggressively pursue revenue growth from cloud consulting for large clients.
“Big Tech has declared a war on legacy (infrastructure) and is throwing huge amounts of money to lubricate the very expensive migration. This, in turn, is creating a huge market for the SI firms,” said Everest Group CEO Peter Bendor-Samuel. “Every SI firm is attempting to position itself for this large and attractive market by building and shoring up their cloud alliances.”
