""IT sector employees who do not recognise the need to upskill will be left behind, Rishad Premji, chief strategy officer at Wipro, has said.

The comments come at a time when the Indian IT sector is adopting new technologies like never before, triggering a fear of layoffs among employees.

“Historically, large organisations used to push skills onto people. Now, more of the skilling is moving to a pool-based model…people are demanding those skills and they have to go out and seek them. People who do not participate and recognise and keep themselves upbeat with the change are going to be left behind,” Premji said.

He said corporations can be a catalyst and provide the platform to upskill and that they cannot necessarily take up the whole responsibility of getting people trained. “Everything has moved to on-demand. It can be highly contextual to their role, their stage of career and their development path,” he said.

The needs of the IT
industry itself are undergoing a shift. A mix of skills are required for corporates to deliver better value to their customers. “I think IT industry today, arguably, is hiring more non-technical people than they ever have in mainstream jobs. It just goes to show you how the nature of the job is also changing,” said Premji.

But whatever one’s technical abilities, it needs to be matched with the right soft skills — the ability to communicate well and work as a part of a team. “How do you combine technical skills with behavioural skills? We focus a lot on that — the ability to communicate, work in teams and not be individual contributors. Those things are becoming more important,” said Premji.

Manish Sabharwal, chairman at TeamLease Services, said the
education system has to undergo a change to keep pace with the nature of change in the workplace. “(Education) has to be multimodal... you get academic credit for apprenticeship, you could do it online, in a classroom... that sort of fluidity in the education system does not exist. I think the world of work is moving much faster than the world of education,” he said at the event.

What's up, WhatsApp?
