Vi lost a whopping 2.47 million subscribers in December 2022. In contrast,
Jio<\/a> and Airtel<\/a> user base expanded to 424.51 million and 367.60 million respectively, as per the latest subscriber data collated by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India<\/a> (Trai).

Trai data showed total wireless subscribers decreased for the third time in four months - falling to 1.142 billion at the end of December 2022, from 1.143 billion in November, dragged by a fall in rural users. Rural wireless user base fell to 515.89 million from 516.45 million a month earlier, while wireless subscriptions in urban areas grew to 627.03 million from 626.6 million.

Reliance
Jio<\/a> also consolidated its market leadership in landline services in December with 0.29 million new subscribers, taking its landline base to 8.4 million. This, while previous market leader BSNL<\/a> added 13,189 subscribers, marginally increasing its base to 7.1 million. Third-ranked Airtel<\/a> added 0.14 million subscribers to end at 6.7 million total subscribers by the end of December 2022.

Trai data showed Jio and Airtel have widened their wireless customer market shares to 37.14% (36.99%) and 32.16% (32.03%) respectively, while
Vodafone Idea<\/a>’s share narrowed to 21.11% (21.33%).

Visitor Location Register, a key metric reflecting the number of active users on a mobile network, indicated that
Bharti Airtel<\/a> had 99.29% of its users active on the network, the maximum proportion among all telcos. Jio had 92.1% of its users active, while Vi had 86.85% users active in December 2022.

Trai data showed both Bharti Airtel and
Reliance Jio<\/a> added customers in rural India, while Vi lost a significant chunk. Airtel and Jio added 0.85 million and 0.54 million customers respectively in these geographies, while Vi lost 1.6 million customers.

Trai data also showed the overall tele-density fell to 82.57% in December 2022 from 82.64% in November.

Data collated by Trai also showed around 12.49 million requests for mobile number portability, increasing the cumulative requests to 784.43 million at the end of December 2022.

The wireline users base increased from 2.71 million subscribers in November to 2.74 million in December, a net addition of 0.32 million.
