Reliance Jio has further consolidated its market leadership in the country’s fibre-based home broadband turf in a neck-and-neck contest that has also seen Bharti Airtel overtaking state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) to become the No 2 wired broadband player, latest subscriber data put out by the telecom regulator showed.

The Mukesh Ambani-led telco added 0.18 million JioFibre customers in December 2021, taking its fixed broadband user base to 4.6 million. Sunil Mittal-led
Airtel, in turn, added 0.12 million users, boosting its home broadband user base to 4.2 million.

State-run BSNL lost another 0.13 million users, and was pushed to third spot in the wired broadband space. Its wired broadband user base fell to 4.1 million in December, indicating its inability to compete effectively with
Jio and Airtel.

“Jio’s gains in fixed broadband (FBB) continued in December while Bharti has overtaken BSNL to become the No 2 operator in this space,” Nomura Research said in a note seen by ET.

The Japanese brokerage was analysing latest telco subscriber data put out by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai).

Jio’s home broadband subscriber market share was highest at 17.3% end-December, compared to Airtel’s 15.9% and BSNL’s 15.4%, ICICI Securities said, analysing the latest Trai data.

“Wired broadband subscriber adds in December were stable for Jio and Bharti, while BSNL lost more customers, which reduced its market share,” the brokerage added.

Jio had wrested leadership in the fixed broadband turf in November 2021 from previous market leader, BSNL.

India's telecom market leader also added the maximum number of active mobile users among the top telcos in December 2021, despite the sharp tariff hikes taken in late-November. Jio also retained market leadership on overall active user base and active user share scores.

It added 4.7 million active users, taking its December active user base to 364 million. By contrast, Airtel saw a slowdown in active users adds at 0.8 million that left its December active user base at 349 million, Trai data showed.

Jio’s strong active subs additions "improved its VLR (visitor location register) ratio to 87.6% in Dec’21,” said J M Financial in a note. Jio’s VLR ratio is now superior to Vodafone Idea’s 86.4%. Airtel’s VLR ratio, though, remains highest at 98%.

Active or ‘visitor location register' (VLR) data put out every month by Trai reflects the actual number of customers actively using a mobile network.

Analysts said the massive clean up of low-paying and dormant users since September 2021 has gradually boosted Jio’s active users base and VLR ratio.

Jio also expanded its lead over Airtel (34.8%) on the active users market share front to 36.4% in December. By contrast, Vodafone Idea (
Vi) lost a whopping 2.1 million active users, further shrinking its active user base to 229 million and its active user share to 22.9%.

ICICI Securities said “the industry-wide mobile broadband user base dipped by 11.4 million to 765 million in December 2021 largely “due to Jio’s 4G sub-base clean-up (12.9 mn) and Bharti’s decline of 0.8mn”.
