By comparison, Bharti Airtel added a modest 0.79 million wireless users, taking its gross user base to 362.96 million while Vodafone Idea’s customer losses continued. Cash-strapped Vi lost 1.8 million mobile customers in June, shrinking its user base further to 256.64 million and reflecting its continuing struggles in the 4G operations front.
“Jio’s strong customer gains indicate that its protracted removal of low-paying 4G users is over, and that it’s now gaining smartphone users, helped by a growing JioPhone Next user base,” said a sector analyst.
By contrast, Airtel’s sluggish customer adds and Vi’s continuing user losses, he said, signalled the impact of costlier mobile services after the hikes taken last winter.
Analysts fear Vi's customer losses could mount once Jio and Airtel launch 5G services later this year, unless the loss-making telco is able to close its long pending external fundraise rapidly and ramp up its mobile broadband networks.
Mukesh Ambani-controlled Jio and Airtel widened their respective market shares to 36% (35.69%) and 31.63% (31.62%) over the previous month, while Vi’s narrowed further to 22.37% (22.56%), latest subscriber data collated by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India showed.
Visitor Location Register, a key metric reflecting the number of active subscribers on a mobile network, indicated that 98.41% of the users were active for Airtel, 92.79% for Jio and 85.2% for Vi.
Data collated by the telecom regulator also showed that India’s mobile user base rose by 0.16% to 1.147 billion at the end of June from end-May.
Trai data showed that the overall wireless tele-density rose marginally from 83.2% in May to 83.27% in June.
In June, 9.02 million subscribers submitted requests for Mobile Number Portability (MNP), increasing the cumulative requests to 714.56 million by the month-end.
Wireline subscribers increased from 25.23 million in end-May to 25.57 million at the end of June, a net increase of 0.33 million.
