NEW DELHI: Reliance Jio is now trialing the interoperability between 4G VoLTE and 5G VoNR, after having showcased some use cases powered by the fifth-generation trial airwaves.

“After trialing advanced
5G services and scenarios, Jio has upgraded its 4G VoLTE network and integrated its Indigenous 5G core to trial 5G VoNR with 4G VoLTE,” the telco’s senior vice president (SVP) Aayush Bhatnagar revealed in a Linkedin post.

The trial includes seamless interoperability between existing 4G voice and video capable devices with enhanced 5G voice and video devices using our 5G network, Bhatnagar added.

In his earlier posts on the professional networking platform, the Jio SVP has revealed that the telco is looking to offer 5G-as-a-Service to industries and enterprises with its compact and scalable 5G solution —
Jio 5G Hyperlite Stack — built using indigenous 5G technology, besides developing a 5G Network Slicing Platform (NSP) which will enable it to offer Network Slicing-as-a-Service.

“This platform pre-integrates with Jio’s home-grown Cloud Native OSS and BSS (TM Forum Certified), to deliver an end-to-end service experience starting right from a customer-facing marketplace of 5G apps,” the Jio SVP had said.

Jio President
Mathew Oommen has told ET that the company is focused on building “right platforms” for its 5G services, and is not shy about looking at a “third party technology” other than its own technology.

Jio has built its own end to end 5G stack, which is currently being trialed across the country using the trial 5G spectrum. The company wants to take the indigenously developed technology to emerging markets after deploying it at scale in the country after 5G auctions.

Reliance Strategic Business Ventures (RSBVL), a wholly-owned unit of Reliance Industries (RIL), will invest Rs 1,670 crore to form an electronics manufacturing JV with US-based Sanmina Corp. which will mainly produce 4G and 5G telecom network equipment for local and overseas markets.

The government plans to auction more than 100,000 MHz of airwaves valued at about Rs 5 lakh crore in June and wants initial rollouts of 5G services by August-September.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) had on April 11 recommended a base price of Rs 317 crore a unit for airwaves in the premium 3.3-3.67 GHz band (C-band), a 36% reduction to its last recommendation in 2018. It also cut the recommended price for the coveted 700 MHz spectrum by 40%, to Rs 3,297 crore per MHz, in a bid to spur India’s mobile phone companies to bid aggressively in the upcoming 5G airwaves sale.
