“Jio’s high-quality, redundant, and always available fibre optic network is the information backbone that carries data traffic from every corner of India and connects it to the global internet. Today, Jio’s pan-India fibre optic network is 11,00,000 route km in length, enough to go around the world more than 27 times,” Mukesh Ambani, chairman, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) said in his address at the oil-to-telecom conglomerate’s 45th annual general meeting on Monday.

Over the past year, the company saw an acceleration in the adoption of
JioFibre, with 2 out of every 3 new customers choosing the telco’s fixed-line internet service.

“JioFibre is now the number one FTTH (fibre-to-the-home) service provider in India with over 7 million connected premises, a feat achieved in less than two years despite lockdowns,” Ambani added.

Despite the strong, India still lags behind significantly the rest of the world in fixed-broadband services with about 20 million connections, the country is ranked a lowly 138th in the world in fixed broadband adoption, he said.

“Unlike in leading nations, the vast majority of our homes, offices, and businesses have been deprived of the power of fixed broadband and ubiquitous indoor WiFi and consequently, the power of modern digital tools,” the RIL chairman said.

“This has to change and this has to change fast,” he exhorted, adding that Jio will enable India to be among the top 10 globally in fixed-broadband adoption.

At the AGM, Reliance Jio’s chairman Akash Ambani took the wraps off of the
AirFiber home gateway, a wireless, single device solution that will deliver fiber-like speed by Jio’s 5G network.

“With
Jio AirFiber, it is really easy and really quick to connect your home or office to gigabit speed internet,” Akash Ambani, chairman of Reliance Jio said.
