The company, which has struggled to keep up with competition and has been pushed out of the top five smartphone rankings along with other Indian players by the Chinese, believes that by offering critical services like financial transactions on security-equipped devices at low prices can not only change the game in their favour but also help the government’s larger agenda of financial inclusion in the bottom of the social pyramid.

“There are a bunch of customisations that we’ve done to make it one of the most secure platforms to do any form of online financial transaction,” said Shashin Devsare, executive director of
Karbonn Mobiles, adding that the latest smartphone will be priced under Rs 5,500.

Karbonn becomes the latest in the handset industry to add services to its portfolio of devices, much like
Samsung, Micromax, Intex and others have done by launching payment platform Samsung Pay and integrated wallets, respectively. Transactions through mobile wallets grew at 350% CAGR to $3.6 billion in the quarter ended March 2017, as per a report by RedSeer Management, while the Niti Aayog puts the number of BHIM downloads at 20 million.

Besides targeting smartphone users who may be using low-cost entry level phones for upgrades, the Delhi-based phone maker and its rivals expect existing featurephone users to move to smartphones if service enabled phones are sold as ready to use. Many have also added free data in partnership with a carrier to prod new users to start using smart devices.

Karbonn has partnered with National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) for the Kavach series of devices. The first of the lot, which will have a fingerprint sensor integrated with BHIM, will be available through 1500-plus offline distributors from this week. Future devices under the Kavach banner will facilitate e-KYC, Aadhar authentication, digi locker and will give access to e-government services.

The company is also working with some apps to enable peer-to-peer transactions to users on a consumer’s phone book and even contextual payments on messenger apps, or in other words, sending money over chat.
