Out of 867 employees, 583 have retired and of the remaining, 46 are expected to reach superannuation in six months, said a senior officer from BSNL’s Dakshina Kannada telecom district. Other than the head office and divisional offices in every taluk, BSNL has 28 customer service offices, 248 telephone exchanges and 600 telephone towers.


“The situation is bad. There is no Plan B in place. Though the top officers are claiming that they will do their best, the fact remains that employees have not received salaries for two months and uncertainty is prevailing. The top management is hoping to outsource some of the activity and reorganise themselves. However, outsourcing to could take a couple of months. Till then, how is the department going to manage? The system will collapse if immediate steps are not taken, an officer said.


Another officer said the rural sector is worst hit.

“In places like Sullia, only five staff members out of 39 will continue in service. In Puttur, out of 62, only 19 will continue and of them, eight are expected to attain superannuation, leaving only 11 staff members at work. Bantwal will be left with 12 members at work. This is the case in most offices,” he said.


Most of the payments to vendors, including Mescom, are pending. The Centre announced a revival package for BSNL last year. “However, barring the VRS<\/a> scheme, none of the other promises have been implemented. This will seriously affect the external maintenance work and internal work, including customer service,” an officer said.
