KOCHI: The Kerala state human rights commission (KSHRC) has said that mobile towers<\/a> should not be installed on the premises of schools, colleges, hospitals, anganawadis and police station by flouting the directive issued by the state information technology department.

Towers that are functioning after violating rules outlined by the information technology department should be stopped immediately, the commission acting chairman,
P Mohana Das<\/a>, in his order stated. The commission issued the directive while considering a petition filed by Valsala C Baby<\/a>, headmistress of Sacred Heart UPS School, Tripunithura<\/a>.

\nAs per the petition, a private telecom operator was planning to build a mobile tower eight metre away from the school. The telecom company was planning to build the tower on the top of a building located opposite to the school.
\n
\nThe residents' association in Tripunithura have also lodged a complaint in this regard.
\n
\nAt present, there are around 300 students studying in the 120-year-old school. The commission has issued a directive to the Tripunithura municipality secretary to stop the construction of the tower near the school. It had already sought a report from the municipality secretary in this regard.
\n
\nThe secretary has informed the commission that the municipality had given permission to build the tower following a request from the company. The municipality in its report stated that the land was allotted to the company after inspecting the site. The secretary in his report stated that it could not cancel the permit issued to the company as the latter had obtained the permit in accordance with the building rules.
\n
\nThe report also stated that the company had failed to mention the fact that a school is functioning nearby the building where they are planning to install the tower.

Meanwhile, the commission has found out that the municipality has given the permission to construct the tower by
flouting the order<\/a> issued by the state IT department<\/a> in 2015.
