KOLKATA: The country's largest white goods maker, LG Electronics’ India sales growth tapered down last fiscal to 4%, growing below the market rate which industry executives attributed to increased competition from newer brands, shying away from online sales and failure to revive smartphone business.

As per the company’s disclosures to the Registrar of Companies,
LG India's gross revenue touched Rs 14,498 crore in 2015-16 compared with Rs 13,937 crore the year earlier. The company’s balance sheet for last year is still not available.

The current fiscal may continue to be difficult for the Korean major with the company yet to make any major breakthrough in the e-commerce and smartphone markets, and
demonetisation likely to impact sales for a couple of months, two senior industry executives said.

“
LG India might be holding onto its business, but it will increasingly become difficult to continue high growth rate like before, with increased competition, unless they are able to open newer growth drivers,” said the chief executive at a rival white goods maker.

LG Electronics India, however, said the company has grown sales at double digit pace this fiscal and the impact of demonetisation will only be a short term phenomenon. A company spokesperson said smartphone is indeed an important segment where the company has recently started manufacturing its handsets in India to localise them.

“LG has constantly grown, across categories, and has been ahead of competition in the consumer durables business. We are quite used to stiff competition right since the time we entered the market, and it continues till date. Yet, LG is the market leader in most of the categories it functions in… Since 2010, our strategy has been to focus on the value game,” the spokesperson said.

LG India’s low growth rate last fiscal comes at a time when the home appliances market grew by around 8%, and the television market grew by 18%.

The company has recently created a team to tap e-commerce business and developing separate models, while it plans to make in-roads into newer areas like water and air purifiers and extend its market share in LED televisions. This year, LG overtook Sony for the second slot in LED televisions after
Samsung.

A senior industry executive said LG India needs to focus on modern and regional retail chains which account for almost 25-30% of industry sales, whereas for LG it is around 10%. “The major chunk of LG India’s revenue comes from distribution to smaller stores and its exclusive showrooms,” he said.

/news/microsofts-zack-weisfeld-on-microsoft-accelerators-evolution-how-do-they-choose-startups-more/55866289
The current fiscal may continue to be difficult for the Korean major with the company yet to make any major breakthrough in the e-commerce and smartphone markets.
["LG","LG India","Samsung","financial results","Balance Sheet","LG Electronics","Devices","demonetisation
telecomnews/lg-indias-sales-growth-tapered-down-last-fiscal-to-4"}}" data-authors="[" writankar mukherjee"]" data-category-name="" data-category_id="" data-date="2016-12-08" data-index="article_1">
