"Currently, in Northeast there are around 7,184 mobile towers which needs to doubled up in the forthcoming time to support emerging technologies," Tower and Infrastructure Providers Association (
TAIPA) in a statement said.

The Delhi-based group represents infrastructure firms such as Bharti Infratel, ATC Tower Corp, GTL Infrastructure and Tower Vision.

It further said that Meghalaya alone would require 2,162 new mobile towers for basic network connectivity across 2,374 villages that were already identified.

Mobile connectivity in Northeastern states has become a daunting task for the government. In January 2018, the Telecom Commission has approved around Rs 15,000 crore for improving the telecom connectivity in eight Northeastern states.

The group also said that Meghalaya has become a fourth Northeastern state to notify the Right of Way rules aligned with the 2016
policy formulated by the Department of Telecom (DoT) to accelerate telecom infrastructure deployment.

The new norms will come into effect from 15th January 2019.

Other states like Manipur, Sikkim, Nagaland, and Mizoram should also notify a state tower policy immediately to empower their citizens, TAIPA added.

“The much-awaited state Right of Way rules have been notified by Meghalaya government on 21st December 2018 that are aligned with the Central government,” the statement added.

“We would like to express our gratitude to Mr. Conrad Sangma and IT department of Meghalaya for prioritising the rollout of telecom infrastructure across the state by notifying the state Right of Way rules with enabling provisions,”
Tilak Raj Dua, Director General at TAIPA said.

Northeastern states of Assam, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh have already notified the
RoW policy in conformity
with the Union government.
