<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>Tech giant Microsoft<\/a> on Monday announced that it will establish a fourth datacenter region in Hyderabad, Telangana, with an investment of over Rs 15,000 crore. The company said that this will be one of the largest data centers in India and its first phase is expected to be operational by 2025.

The Hyderabad datacenter region will be an addition to the existing network of three regions in India at Pune, Mumbai, and Chennai. It will offer the entire Microsoft portfolio across the cloud, data solutions, artificial intelligence (AI), productivity tools, and customer relationship management (CRM) with advanced data security, for enterprises, start-ups, developers, education, and government institutions.

The announcement comes in the backdrop of accelerated digitalization of products and services witnessed over the last two years. There has been a 14% reported rise in the daily data consumption average of 270 Petabytes from pre-lockdown period to an average of 308 Petabytes post-lockdown. Around 16% more time has been spent by smartphone users as compared to pre-COVID-19 period. Schools and Colleges resorting to online education coupled with work from home regulations led to a significant increase in data consumption.

Union Minister of State for Electronics & Information Technology and
Skill Development<\/a> and Entrepreneurship Rajeev Chandrasekhar<\/a> during his visit to Microsoft’s Hyderabad center said, “India’s Digital Economy is expanding and driving the growth of the Indian economy towards the goal of a $5 trillion economy. Today’s commitment to the people and businesses of India will position the country among the world’s digital leaders. The cloud is transforming every industry and sector. The investment in skilling will empower India’s workforce today and into the future.”

India now has the world’s largest digital identity system - Aadhar, India is successfully driving the world’s largest technology driven vaccination campaign through indigenously developed CoWIN platform, development and use of
Aarogya Setu<\/a> app for Covid management and leading the world in digital payments, direct benefit transfers of subsidy and financial technology. It clearly demonstrates to the world that India has become one of the pre-eminent Nations in the use of technology not just in conventional areas of R&D, technology development & innovations, but in the use of technology to empower and transform citizen’s lives, said Chandrasekhar.

Going forward, the rapid rate of digitization is going to pose both challenges as well as opportunities. “To tap the opportunities, we at MeitY, are working as per MeitY’s 1000 Day Vision plan. Data centers are an important element of our digital ecosystem that is soon going to be the best in the world. We are conducting consultations with all stakeholders for a new National Data Center
Policy<\/a> to make India a global data centre hub,” added Rajeev Chandrasekhar<\/a>.

Telangana is emerging as a ‘challenger’ in the Indian IT sector for its software exports registering an increase by seven percent year-over-year to reach Rs 5 trillion ($67.4 billion) in FY 21.

Microsoft is partnering closely with the government of Telangana to accelerate the adoption of cloud, AI, IoT and cybersecurity solutions for governance. This includes efforts to upskill government officials in next generation technology, supporting young girls to build careers in cybersecurity through the CyberShikshaa program, and partnering on skilling programs like DigiSaksham with the Ministry of Labour and Employment to equip jobseekers from rural areas with technical skills.

KT Rama Rao, Minister Municipal Administration & Urban Development, Industries & Commerce, and Information Technology, Government of Telangana, said, “This will also be one of the largest foreign direct investments (FDIs) the state has attracted. Microsoft and Telangana have a long history, with Hyderabad hosting one of the largest Microsoft offices in the world.”

With the expansion of its cloud datacenter footprint in India, Microsoft is empowering and co-innovating with customers and partners. Microsoft’s customers in India, include Jio, Inmobi, Infosys, TCS, ICICI, Bajaj Finserv, Apollo Hospitals, Mahindra, Dr. Reddy’s Labs, Piramal, State Bank of India, Flipkart, Pidilite, and Amity.

Microsoft launched Azure Availability Zones in December 2021 in its Central India datacenter region. This forms the most extensive network of datacenters in the country with disaster recovery provisions and coverage of seismic zones.
