According to a survey of 1 million users on its platform done by re-commerce company
Cashify<\/a>, top-selling brands in the resale category in 2019 were Xiaomi (27%), Samsung (16%), Apple (16%), Motorola (12%), Vivo (5%), OnePlus<\/a> (4%) and Oppo<\/a> (4%).

“Generally, the second hand market mirrors the trend in the new smartphone market,” said Nakul Kumar, Co-founder and COO, Cashify. “The major diversion seen here is for Apple, because it is an aspirational premium brand which most Indians can only buy as an affordable second hand device.”

Tier-1 cities including Delhi (18%), Mumbai (13%), Bengaluru (12%) and Hyderabad (7%) are the fastest growing re-commerce markets, data showed. “A majority of Indians listed their smartphones for sale between 12 Noon and 1 PM in the day. Delhiites seemed to be breaking their smartphone screens the most, with 33% among all Indian metro cities.”

From 14 million shipments in 2018-19, refurbished handsets are expected to grow by 20-25 percent by 2020, the report said. The entire pre-owned smartphone market, on the other hand, is expected to almost double its sales to 48 million in 2020 from 26 million in 2016.

“Numerous launches, more brand options, new price points and the overall aspirational value of an upgrade, are some of the factors that led the second-hand smartphone industry to widen its turf during 2019-20,” Kumar said.
