OFC network<\/a> worth Rs 4 crore, that allegedly went missing for years, was found during the ongoing digging work for road. The cable was laid 10 years back promising a speedy internet service on the campus. It couldn’t be located later as the company that laid the network did not put any markers.
A senior teaching faculty, requesting anonymity, said that most of the authorities were unaware about the laid OFC. “I do not know what happened when OFC was laid a decade ago. But this is shocking that no one bothered about the loss to the tune of crores of rupees,” said the teaching faculty.
Another faculty said that few years ago, a box was put outside his office with a claim that it would be connected with OFC to increase the internet speed. “I am still waiting when this box will be attached to the OFC,” he said.
A professor at BU said, “Specific guidelines are to be adhered to while laying OFC network. In BU, no one bothered about it. For past ten years, the university was not able to trace it. Now, digging has surfaced the cable from different points. It is very difficult to prevent the cable from being wrecked as nobody is aware of its route.”
Vice-chancellor Prof R J Rao said that he has instructed the agency in-charge of the road construction that a penalty will be imposed in case the cable is damaged. “They have been instructed to avoid causing any damage to the cable. BU will impose penalty if the instruction is not adhered to.”
The case of missing OFC had resurfaced four years ago when a committee of experts visited the university campus to suggest measures for better and fast internet networking. BU had earmarked Rs 17 crore for equipping the campus with hi-tech facilities. But members of the committee were shocked after they failed to find the underground OFC network laid in 2008-09.
