It also said that Pokemon GO has emerged as the third largest game when accounted for total game spend across iOS and Google Play in 2016, generating about $950 million in direct spending despite being available for only half the year.

\n\"The breakout success of Pokémon GO propelled mobile games further ahead of consoles,\" Danielle Levitas, SVP of Research at App Annie, said.

\nThe study also found that mobile will remain the largest revenue-generating platform for games with improving augmented and virtual reality technologies. The study said that around 24 million Americans played an Artificial Reality (AR) game in September 2016, 56% of whose gamer base was under 25 years of age reflecting Pokémon GO's popularity.

\nThe report highlighted that it is unlikely that mobile Virtual Reality (VR) gaming in 2017 will replicate AR gaming's feat of 2016 since a quality mobile VR gaming experience generally requires a separate hardware purchase.

\nHowever, the report said that demographics of mobile VR gamers point to rapid revenue growth for the gaming segment. \"..the fact that a large share of mobile VR gamers also enjoy eSports content implies that competitive multiplayer gaming will emerge as an important mobile VR market driver – and help put some distance between the leading suppliers and the competition,\" Lewis Ward, research director of gaming and AR\/VR at IDC, said.

\n46% of the surveyed said that they played mobile games for more than 15 hours a week of which 56% were male, the report said. It added that the group's average consumer spend on mobile games was 42% above the total mobile gamer average spend in the third quarter of 2016.
