“Our gaming intelligence attributes this spike in hardcore and enthusiast gaming to powerful smartphones across the mid and lower price tiers,” said Prabhu Ram, Head-Industry Intelligence Group (IIG), CyberMedia Research.
Hypercasual gamers over the past two years have switched or upgraded to new smartphones, which has reflected in the increased game time, Ram said.
To be sure, average time spent on mobile gaming<\/a> in a week has risen to 4.6 hours post-Covid, as compared to 3.5 hours pre-Covid, as per the findings.
Three in every five gamers spend 31 mins to 120 mins in a typical play session. On average, each gamer spends 79 minutes in a typical play session, it added.
“At the core of these democratized gaming experiences in the value-for-money smartphone segment are, amongst others, the powerful smartphone processors,” said Ram.
Qualcomm leads in brand awareness (87%) and usage (29%), followed closely by MediaTek in brand awareness (82%) and usage (28%) metrics, the report found.
Powerful smartphones have also helped accelerate the number of hardcore gamers which has risen 40% in the post-Covid period, with a similar trend observed in the casual gamer numbers. But hypercasual gamers declined by 16%, the findings showed.
The survey indicates that smartphone gaming is increasingly becoming casual, and gamers have attributed to support in improving concentration and making them informed about the outside world, said Satya Mohanty, Head- Industry Consulting Group (ICG), CyberMedia Research.
The findings also show that, in addition to a powerful chipset, battery life (66%), fast game loading (54%) and display (53%) are key aspects that mobile gamers<\/a> seek in a smartphone.
With increasing gaming maturity, casual and hardcore Indian mobile gamers are now increasingly switching to paid gaming apps from freemium apps.
In comparison to the pre-Covid period, there has been a whopping >100% uptick in paid gaming in post-Covid India. The average mobile gaming spend during this period increased a significant 44%, the findings revealed.
CMR conducted the survey across six cities – Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai, Kolkata and Hyderabad across age groups of 13-48 years.
