Mumbai: Online gaming platform Mobile Premier League<\/a> (MPL<\/a>) is entering the US market, in a bid to capture the world's largest mobile gaming market.

The Sequoia India-backed startup seeks to stand out in the US market by becoming a ‘super app’—a unified gaming platform with multiple offerings. It has opened an office in New York to oversee operations in the region, where it has a team of five people.

“The massive influx of users that we have in India enables us to build formats that might not have developed in the US because it doesn’t have the same level of user base. That's the advantage that we have, and this is the reason why we are carrying this advantage forward,”
Sai Srinivas<\/a>, co-founder and chief executive officer of MPL, told ET.

The three-year-old startup was earlier this year valued at $945 million after it raised $95 million in a Series D funding round. It has over 75 million users in India. MPL’s revenue has jumped significantly compared to last year, a momentum it seeks to carry onto the next, Srinivas said. He added that the platform is “very well capitalised” and is not raising any more funds in the near future.

MPL will launch in the US on iOS and Android with games like baseball and solitaire. It will roll out new games and formats, such as synchronous gaming, in the market throughout the year.

Fellow Indian online gaming startup, Games24x7, backed by Tiger Global, is also eyeing the US market for expansion, it said in April.

“There is no other equivalent platform of similar value proposition, currently operating in the US. The market for competitive gaming or esports is already validated there,” Srinivas said. “From our perspective, we see that if MPL can provide the same value proposition in the US on both Android and on iOS, then we're probably the only gaming platform in the world that's available in three out of the four largest markets in the world,”

MPL expanded into Indonesia in mid-2019 and established itself as a leading gaming platform, with over 5 million registered users in the country, according to the company.

In the US, Srinivas says, users can play casual games of skill for free as well as in paid contests starting as low as 60 cents and going up to $6.

MPL’s service fee in the US to host tournaments will be higher compared to India and Indonesia. “From a revenue standpoint, we foresee a situation where the US and India will probably be neck to neck. Even Indonesia will probably be about 60 to 70% of that size,” Srinivas said.

The company said it is also building a safety feature that will ensure that no gamer outside of the US can access the app via virtual private network.

In India, the online gaming industry has grown rapidly on the back of the Covid-19 pandemic as well as
internet<\/a> and smartphone penetration, despite regulatory hurdles. According to market and consumer data specialist Statista, the Indian mobile gaming market value is projected to reach $405 million in 2022, an over 1.5x jump compared to 2016.

Cofounded by Srinivas and Shubham Malhotra, MPL is based in Bengaluru, with offices in New Delhi, Pune, Jakarta, Singapore, and New York. It has more than 900 employees. In India, it offers esports, casual games, fantasy sports, and card games.
