NEW DELHI: Motorola said that India has the potential to become a significant part of its global operations having taken a lead in terms of the Lenovo-owned company’s foray into non-handset businesses like smart TV and smart appliances.

Motorola had earlier this month launched its global-first range of
smart home appliances for Indian consumers through a strategic partnership with Flipkart.

“Since most of these are global first launches for Motorola, there is significant interest from global leadership in their launch and success in the Indian market. Smart home appliances is a new and fast growing market and we have entered it with premium set of products,” Prashanth Mani, Country Head, Lenovo Mobile Business Group and Managing Director,
Motorola Mobility told ET.

Mani said that the smart home appliance market is expected to grow $6 billion by 2022 in India driven by increasing per capita income and digitisation in the country. “Globally, the market is $52 billion...we believe it is the right time to enter the space.”

The company is launching Smart air conditioners, refrigerators and washing machines, having launched smart TVs and audio products.

“Our priority is that wherever we enter, we want to build premium positioning for the brand.”

The company is also increasing its focus on the premium handset segment, and it will launch its global portfolio of 5G smartphones to the country. “We will also evaluate how quickly we want to take 5G prices down in India,” Mani said, adding that the mid and low end range of Motorola phones have seen growth across Flipkart and offline channels.

The executive said that Motorola hasn’t experienced any impact on its handset business this year despite lockdown and globally supply chain issues. “This year is not going to have any impact of Covid on our handset business. 2020 will be better than 2019,” he added.

Mani said that Motorola’s handset business is growing faster than the market. “...we will continue to grow faster than market quarter over quarter.”

He said that Motorola did well during the ongoing Pandemic globally, and grew 33% sequentially in terms of revenue and 35% in terms of volume in the last quarter. “We are already profitable in India, and have seen profitable growth in the first quarter of this year.”

As per Counterpoint Research, Motorola had 1% volume market share in the second quarter. It, however, expects the handset brand to drive sales during the festive season.

ET reported last week that Motorola is in talks with Dixon Technologies and Lava for a contract of manufacturing $1 billion worth of smartphones in India.

Mani declined to comment on these talks but said that the company is “well-versed to take benefits of the PLI scheme for handsets.”
