NEW DELHI: Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani on Friday called for urgent policy measures to move away from 2G-based telecom service, which started 25 years ago, and make it a "part of history".

“India still has 300 million
mobile subscribers trapped in the 2G era, their feature phones keep them excluded even from the basic users of the internet at a time when both India and the rest of the world are standing at the doorsteps of 5G telephony,” Ambani said in a video message at an industry event marking 25 years of the sector.

Jio recently entered into a commercial agreement with Google to jointly develop entry-level affordable 4G and possibly 5G smartphones in the future with an aim to make India 2G-mukt or free of 2G technology.

Under the partnership,
Google will provide optimizations to its Android operating system and the Play Store for smartphones that Jio will launch in the market.

This is the second attempt by Jio to launch own-branded smartphones, having previously launched ‘Lyf’ branded smartphones to quickly bring subscribers to its network after the launch.

Ambani, during his video message, said that there is a need to look at the obstacles that have prevented the Indian consumers and the Indian society from fully benefiting from the
digital revolution.

He added that these digital platforms and create new and attractive employment and livelihood opportunities for India’s youth.

Ambani said that the democratization of mobile telephony and the internet has kept the wheels of the economy running. “The ongoing COVID lockdown has provided the best examples of how mobile phones are empowering people. They have kept the nation connected,” he added.

“India truly took a big flight into the bright future with the advent of Mobile telephony in 1995…the birth of fixed-line telephony was one of them. However, it provided only partial freedom of communication…the transition from landline to mobile was undoubtedly a revolutionary disruption,” he said.

Ambani added that mobile telephony itself has undergone many disruptive and transformational changes in the past 25 years,

“ First, Mobility has become affordable beyond all expectations in 1995 the cost of a permanent call from one cell phone was 24 rupees, 16 rupees for the caller & 8 rupees for the call, now voice calls.
