Jaipur: Turning on multi-step authentications can offer a strong shield against malware and phishing attacks, city police said after analysing a series of online financial frauds.
Talking to TOI, DCP (South) Mridul Kacahwa said many people have been relying on basic passwords to protect their different online accounts like internet banking, e-wallets, emails etc. He urged people to use two-factor authentication, also known as 2FA. “It is a security function under which users provide two different authentication elements to verify access to multiple devices and online accounts,” he said, adding that it offers an extra security lawyer which makes the scammers’ task challenging.
“Scammers can easily gain access to your passwords and tap into the money preserved online. But once you enable a multi-step verification process, you can easily ward off phishing attacks,” he said.
As per Mridul, there are different steps one can take for online protection. “For instance, one can receive OTPs (one-time passwords) through the SMS text message and voice calls for a safer authentication process,” he said. Similarly, various mobile apps allow a push notification option too.
“One major benefit of push notification is that a user can easily approve or deny access to email or device through a single touch,” he said.
“People are increasingly using hardware tokens, these are small portable devices like an electronic key that is used to gain access to a particular network or online resource,” Mridul said
Police said amidst rising incidents of phishing attacks and scammers using advanced tools to prey on people, it is important for users to employ a string of cyber security measures that can protest them. “I firmly advised everyone to turn on the two-factor authentication of their social media and other online accounts so that attackers cannot easily gain access. It can also strongly preserve your online identities like banking passwords, etc,” he said.
