NEW DELHI: Spam detection and caller ID app Truecaller Tuesday said it has acquired over 4% stake in Singapore-based game development company Mayhem Studios which focuses on the Indian market for about SEK 30 million.

The company focuses on developing mobile games for the Indian market. Other investors include
Sequoia and Mobile Premier League, Truecaller said in a statement.

Mobile Premier League (MPL), an e-sports and
skill gaming app is a unicorn and an online gaming platform offering games in fantasy sports, sports games, puzzle, casual and board games.

"Truecaller has a unique position in India with approximately 250 million users and is today one of India's most used apps. Mayhem Studios is an exciting company that is well-positioned to take market share in the fast-growing Indian market for mobile games,” said Nami Zarringhalam, co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer at Truecaller.

Truecaller expects that the collaboration with Mayhem Studios will provide Truecaller with valuable insights into how it can create added value for its advertising partners.

“In addition to being a good investment, it should contribute to us being able to build a stronger position for Truecaller's advertising platform within the
mobile gaming market,” he added.

Govt notifies online gaming rules

“These rules don't deal with all the nuances of games of chance, games of skill. We bypassed that and laid out a basic principle that the moment an online gaming trespasses into involving betting and wagering, then it falls afoul of these rules,” said Rajeev Chandrasekhar, minister of state for electronics and IT. The government considers “the online gaming ecosystem as being a very important and integral part of the goal of taking India’s digital economy to $1 trillion,” he said.
