Following the inundation of spam calls<\/a> that seem to originate from international numbers, WhatsApp<\/a>’s engineering teams have moved to introduce new “classifiers” which can identify these calls and mark them as spam, sources in the know told ET.
The Meta-owned instant messaging platform hopes to completely stop spam calls over the next two days, a source said, adding that the introduction of “classifiers” to identify and block these calls started working quicker than the company had hoped.
“What’s new in these spam calls is that these numbers only give a missed call and then prey on the curiosity of the victim to call them back. Once that happens, the victim has walked into a trap set by the spammer,” the source said.
This defeats one of the strongest spam call “classifier” that most telecom companies and over-the-top- messaging and calling apps like WhatsApp employ, which is checking if the caller or message sender is in the contact book of the recipient of the calls and messages, the source said.
“So, if a new number, which is not present in your contact book, messages or calls you, it is immediately flagged. Now, if there is a conversation between the two parties, it is nothing untoward. But if the new number is a spammer, it will get reported by more than one user. That number can then easily be identified and blocked,” the source said.
WhatsApp has also been facing the issue of spam numbers not being reported by users even if they have not called back international numbers, the source said, adding that most people tend to ignore such calls rather than engage with them or even report them.
“The integrity teams at Meta can only build classifiers for problems that exist and then anticipate a few more. But if such calls are not being reported, either because the user calls back or ignores the calls, by reporting and blocking mechanism is immediately bypassed,” the source said.
Over the past few days, WhatsApp users have been inundated with spam calls originating from outside the country. Most of these calls have country prefixes of +62, +84, +254 and +251, indicating they originated from Indonesia, Vietnam, Kenya, and Ethiopia.
On Thursday, the minister of state for electronics and information technology said that the central government would send a notice to WhatsApp seeking the reasons behind the sudden spurt in spam calls on the instant messaging and calling app.
The minister had also said that the IT ministry would also seek to know from WhatsApp if these spam calls were being done by bots who were sending messages and making calls by using random number generations which had a +91 prefix indicating they were from India.
In its response, a WhatsApp spokesperson had on Thursday said that the company had ramped up AI (Artificial Intelligence) & ML (Machine Learning) systems to bring down such incidents significantly.
“We expect to be able to control the current incidence effectively. We will continue to work relentlessly towards ensuring a safe experience for our users,” the spokesperson had then said.
