New Delhi: Finnish telecoms gear maker Nokia Monday said that its has been selected by NASA to build the first ever cellular network on the Moon.

Nokia Bell Labs' technology will be used to build and deploy the first LTE/4G communications system on the lunar surface in late 2022.

The company is partnering with Intuitive Machines to deliver a network in their lunar lander and deliver it to the lunar surface. The network will configure itself and establish the LTE communication system on the moon.

Nokia said that the network will provide critical communication capabilities for many different data transmission applications, including vital command and control functions, remote control of lunar rovers, real-time navigation and streaming of high definition video.

The network will provide access to astronauts of activities such as: voice and video communications capabilities, telemetry and biometric data exchange, deployment and control of robotic and sensor payloads.

Nokia’s lunar network will be designed to withstand the harsh conditions of the launch and lunar landing, and to operate in conditions of space. The cellular network will be in a compact form with stringent size, weight and power constraints of space payloads.

“Nokia plans to supply commercial LTE products and provide technology to expand the commercialization of LTE, and to pursue space applications of LTE’s successor technology, 5G.” the company said.
