""NEW DELHI: Finnish telecom gear maker Nokia said that its business hasn’t been “impacted too much” by the ongoing consolidation in the country's telecom sector, and the India unit is still going through the restructuring program, which was earlier announced globally.

“In a long-term, it is better to have healthy operators than weaker telcos, from a consolidation perspective. We work with all top five operators in India. From that perspective, it has not impacted us too much,”
Sanjay Malik, Nokia’s India head, told ET. “The restructuring is a global program which was announced, and India is also part of it.”

His comments come at a time when Nokia’s rivals—
Ericsson and Huawei are struggling to grow in India and have slashed respective headcount in the last one year or so across functions.

In India, Indian telecom operators will continue to expand 4G LTE networks, and will also focus on end to end bandwidth creation through fiberisation of sites and backhaul improvement. “Besides, new services like fiber to home and fiber to enterprise will also pick up in India. It's positive from our perspective,” Malik said.

Furthermore, the company has upped its focus on the non-telco business to drive overall growth in India. “We have won a few deals in the non-CSP segment, which is one of the focus areas for growth. Overall, we have added 15 customers across cable, fixed line, enterprise segments in 2017 calendar year,” the executive said.

In the telecom space, telcos are now coming up with demands such as operating expenses (opex) reduction. Malik said that Nokia is helping its telco customers through transformation and scale that being effectiveness, along with model change. “Basis on these two, we get efficiencies in our system through which we meet customer demand… the focus is also to reduce per MB cost,” he added

Furthermore, telcos are now considering large scale deployment of technologies like 4.5G and 4.9 G to maximise returns on network investment, and to increase efficiencies and network capacity.

“Telcos are now considering
massive mimo and are deploying carrier aggregation. The massive mimo trials are ongoing and commercial deployment will happen within this calendar year,” Malik said. “India would be one of the top users of these technologies. India has the opportunity to get into 4.5G and 4.9G before hitting 5G.”

In India, Bharti Airtel has commercially deployed massive mimo technology in some circles using Huawei and
ZTE technology. Vodafone, Idea and Reliance Jio are also conducting trials of the technologies with all vendors.

Malik said that Nokia’s focus is to help telcos move from 4G to 5G using these new technologies. “From overall business perspective, high growth area will be mainly the IP and transport, along with radio, which network expansion and deployment of technologies like massive mimo.
