NEW DELHI: Finnish telecoms gear maker Nokia said it will supply its O-RAN (Open-Radio Access Network) fronthaul multi-vendor solution to NTT DOCOMO’s 5G network which will allow the Japanese telco to source hardware and software from different vendors to optimize its fifth-generation wireless network.
This follows a successful trial of Nokia’s 5G O-RAN AirScale baseband at DOCOMO’s Lab in Yokosuka, Japan.
During the trial, Nokia’s O-RAN solution was integrated and tested with third-party O-RUs (radio units).
“Nokia is helping to prepare for the network architecture of the future by building open interfaces on top of its existing solutions, offering CSPs a choice to pursue O-RAN. Nokia has already made significant investments in O-RAN by leading the early deployment of the RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) and the open fronthaul,” the telecoms gear maker said in a statement.
Nokia is a member of the industry group called the O-RAN Alliance which counts Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, US’ Dish, AT&T, Japan’s Rakuten Mobile, Deutsche Telekom, among other telecom operators, vendors, and industry-academia as its members.
The alliance is working to define common interfaces between systems to reduce complexity and accelerate the deployment of multi-vendor RANs.
“NTT DOCOMO has been actively driving open RAN standardization and commercialization, being the world’s first operator to deploy multi-vendor O-RAN solutions for the 5G network. Successful testing with Nokia is an important step in further accelerating open RAN commercialization and its global expansion,” said Sadayuki Abeta, General Manager of Radio Access Network Development Department, NTT DOCOMO.
“This project with NTT DOCOMO is further evidence of our commitment to leading the open mobile future by investing in Open RAN solutions,” said Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia. “We have the scale and capabilities to address the increased customer demand for this technology, underpinned by the world-class network performance and security that only Nokia can deliver."
