The NAV1 campus in Mahape, Navi Mumbai is planned with the capacity for up to 4 data centers, reaching up to 150 MW of facility load. In Mumbai region, NTT has three data center campuses.
Currently, NTT has 12 data centers in India spread across Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi NCR, and Chennai, with a total facility power capacity close to 220 MW.
The company is already among the largest data centers operators in India and is currently on an expanding spree with new DC facilities coming up across all of its existing locations. NTT is developing eight more data centers and has plans to reach a facility load capacity of 509 MW by March 2024.
In Chennai, the company is building a 6-acre data center campus with whole building expected to go live around November 2023. For Noida, the company has similar plans (developing a 6-acre campus) with the data center expected go live by February 2023.
These are part of the planned $2 billion investment that the company had earmarked in 2020 for scaling its infrastructure capacity. Globally, NTT is one of the world’s largest data center operators, with over 1,300 MW of data center capacity today, including a large development pipeline of a 25 percent increase in capacity across more than 20 countries and regions globally.
Demand is plenty for DC operators but there will be consolidation

Fot NTT, the largest demand drivers are hyperscalers, OTT players, banks and payments services providers but overall it is not just limited to these but spread across various sectors. “The cloudification of everything is driving huge demand. As everything is sold as a service over the cloud, it has to be put up somewhere in a data center. Apart from that, data localisation, as well as pandemic to some extent, has been the growth driver for us,” said, Sanghi.
Even the larger players seek easing the procedure of setting up a new DC
Talking about long and cumbersome procedure of getting approvals before opening a facility, Sanghi said, it is something we all have grown to accept. “Ideally, the process should be smooth and the companies should not struggle while setting up data center infrastructure in the country. I would certainly urge the government to make it easier to do the business and that is something we are working with the government to see how some of these bottlenecks could be fixed,”
He also added that given the increased interest in this sector and huge investments being made, I think there will be positive changes in the future.
Sanghi pointed out that for every new data center project, the company has a separate spreadsheet on the statutory tracker which includes a list of upto 35 clearances such as Consent to Establishment, Fire NOC, permission from Airport Authority of India, the number of approvals required goes up to 35.
“Though all of these permissions are essential, they should be streamlined so that DC companies don’t have to struggle to get these approvals and data centers could be developed quickly. There has been a lot of industry dialogue with the government on streamlining the procedure of establishing a data center, and the government has been very receptive to the concerns that are hampering ease of doing business,” he maintained.
Currently, NTT has a team separate team which is solely responsible for getting all of the required approvals for different states (each state has different regulations/policies on DCs).
