Nubia launched its first product as a standalone brand a few months back with the Z11 Mini - a mid-range smartphone that impressed us with its design and camera performance. Now, the company has launched its flagship smartphone, Nubia Z11 that competes head to head with the much-loved OnePlus 3.

Display

What makes the Nubia Z11 stand out from the usual crowd is its gorgeous edge to edge 5.5-inch display. No, it does not curve like the S7 Edge, but it is true edge to edge display with no black bezels on the side. This makes the phone stand-out from the usual crowd and we were asked about the details of the phone by almost everyone who saw the phone. The screen has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels which gives it a pixel density of 403 ppi - this keeps everything pin-sharp and easy to read. Brightness levels are great with excellent viewing angles and vivid colour output. The screen is responsive and has an almost perfect level of touch rejection on the sides - if you are holding the phone and your palm is accidently touching the edge of the screen, it will not be recognized as touch input. Overall, it is a joy to watch videos and play games on the phone all because of the spectacular display.

However, Nubia has not put the edge to edge display just for show. You can use the both edges of the screen with gesture to enable additional functionality. The additional functions you can enable including switching between apps, launching an app, switching between home panels, adjust brightness levels as well as go back by tapping the edge. The functions need some time to get used to, but once you start using them, they do add to your speed of using the phone.

Design

Due to the bezel-less display, the phone is overall slimmer in dimensions compared to other phones with similar size screen. This makes the phone comfortable to hold. Construction of the phone is sturdy as it managed to handle a few accidental drops without any issue. While the phone has a unibody design, it is not a full metal body. The rear side has a metal panel sandwiched between plastic on the top and bottom - the entire rear panel has a matte finish which adds to the overall look and feel of the phone in our opinion. On the right side is the power and volume keys, left side has the sim slots, top has the IR blaster and 3.5mm audio jack while the bottom has the USB Type-c port along with machine drilled speaker holes. The rear has the fingerprint sensor in the middle for comfortable access while the camera module sits on the top left corner. Overall, the phone holds its ground in terms of looks and design in front of the competition but the display plays a big role in giving it the premium appearance.

Hardware and Performance
As mentioned above, the Nubia Z11 stands neck to neck with
OnePlus 3. It shares the same hardware - Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, 6GB RAM, 64GB storage and a 3,000mAh battery. However, where the OnePlus 3 has non-expandable storage, the Nubia comes with hybrid SIM slot - users can increase the storage via a microSD card - a big advantage over the OnePlus 3 in our opinion.

As expected from such hardware, the performance is top-notch. The phone has not issues running any game or app we tried and even played a 4k video without any issue. Switching between running apps is butter smooth and even with over 20 apps running in the background we had over 1.5GB RAM free. Battery life is as expected - the phone manages to last from morning 9 am to 9pm with moderate to heavy usage. With light usage, it managed to last over one day - you will end up charging the phone once every day irrespective of usage pattern. Thankfully there is quick charge support and the phone went from 10 to 70% with half hour of charging. We did notice the phone started to heat up a bit when taxed, but it never became so hot that it was uncomfortable to hold.

Software
Nubia Z11 comes with company's custom
Nubia OS based on Android 6.0. We loved the fact that like the Z11 mini, the Z11 also had no bloatware apps pre-loaded on the device. The interface lacks an app drawer - all apps and widgets are placed on different home panels. The UI comes with sharp icons, smooth animations and is very responsive. Moreover, it is loaded with features. We already mentioned the Edge gestures for the screen above. In addition to these, there are standard gestures such as flip to mute, double tap to wake and take a screenshot by swiping up with three fingers. You also get the option to create Dual instances of supported apps (Facebook, WhatsApp etc.) so that you can have multiple accounts on the same device. There is also a split screen function that enables you to run two apps simultaneously on the screen. You can take a long screenshot, customize the fingerprint scanner's long press function, change navigation button layout, customize the breathing light, lock aps with fingerprint, enable power saving as well as do one touch memory cleanup. While the software feature set is very impressive, the phone does have a few bugs. Apps that require additional permission for screen overlay such as Truecaller and Facebook messenger had issues with the phone's interface at times. Also, third party launchers failed to become the default launcher on the phone, so you must use the Nubia launcher only. We hope Nubia will work on solving these small issues.

Camera

We were impressed by the Z11 mini's camera and therefore had great expectation from the Z11's camera also. On paper, the Nubia Z11 features a 16MP primary camera with f2.0 aperture, phase detection, autofocus and optical image stabilization. There is a variety of modes to play with including a pro mode, macro mode, multi-exposure, light painting, slow shutter, RAW capture and even a star trail capture mode. The photos captures are impressive - good details with almost no noise in daylight and indoors. Even low-light images have surprisingly minimum noise levels. In our opinion, the rear camera on the Nubia Z11 is one of the best in its price range - it stands neck to neck with the OnePlus 3 and Honor 8 camera and at times even manages to take better photos than both. The only letdown was the panorama mode - while capturing the panorama was simple, the image quality was not up to the mark as there was lack of details and visible noise. The front 8MP camera has a wide-angle lens combined with f2.4 aperture and is again a great selfie camera Even in low light, the images turned out good - they were well lit and had above average details. We did find the smile shutter for front camera to be irritating but thankfully that can be switched off from the settings. Video recording from the rear camera can be done in up to 4K resolution and while the recording quality is great, there was no option to capture stills while recording a video - it would have been a welcome addition.

Other Little Things

Nubia Z11 comes with a hybrid SIM slot - so users can either use it with dual sim or one sim and a microSD card slot depending on the usage. Connectivity is taken care with WiFi ac, Bluetooth 4.1, NFC, 4G and VoLTE support - we used it with a Jio SIM and it worked without any issues. The fingerprint scanner on the rear get full marks as it managed to recognize and unlock the phone 10 out of 10 times we tried. There is Dolby Atmos audio integrated for superior audio output in headphones. Even the speaker output is no slouch - the volume levels are louder than average and the output does not distort even at full volume. The IR blaster on top works seamlessly with the remote-control app and offers control for TV, set-top box, projectors, DVD player and air conditioners. We could find most of the Indian brands on it, and for those models that were not available, the app has a custom learning feature. The only thing missing on the Nubia Z11 is FM radio which is again not a deal-breaker for most now a day.

Conclusion
The Nubia Z11 is a flagship that manages to check all the right boxes when it comes to features, hardware, performance and style. It has all the ingredients to be the next big thing and even the pricing is great in our opinion. The issue is that for the same price a user has the option of OnePlus 3T - successor the fantastic OnePlus 3 with the updated Snapdragon 821 processor, 16MP front camera and a large 3,400mAh battery. It is a tough-choice to choose between the two
devices as the performance difference for most users will be negligible. The Z11 stands out with its edge to edge display and expandable storage over the OnePlus in our opinion, but the OnePlus 3T scores with its improved hardware. The issue is that Nubia is still a relatively unknown brand when compared to OnePlus and this is something that Nubia needs to change. They have a star product with the Z11 and if marketed well, it can be the device that makes Nubia the next big brand in the Indian smartphone market.

Due to the bezel-less display, the phone is overall slimmer in dimensions compared to other phones with similar size screen.
["android","reviews","Qualcomm","Devices","oneplus","Nubia","Oneplus 3","Nubia Z11","z11 mini","Nubia OS based
telecomnews/nubia-z11-review-a-phone-that-ticks-all-the-right-boxes"}}" data-authors="[" karan bajaj"]" data-category-name="" data-category_id="" data-date="2016-12-14" data-index="article_1">
