\"\" NEW DELHI: Chinese mobile start-up OnePlus<\/a> said that its flagship VoLTE smartphone<\/a> OnePlus 3<\/a> will help it further consolidate its presence in the Rs 20,000 and above price segment, which is currently dominated by Samsung and Apple in the country.

\n\n\t“As a company, our focus has always been on the premium segment. We have a sizeable presence in this segment, and are among only few brands that have been able to penetrate into this price segment,” Vikas Agarwal, General Manager at OnePlus India, told ET.\n

\n\n\t “It’s a virgin segment for us. Not many players are operating in this segment,” he said, adding that India has been one of the best performing markets globally for OnePlus, and it ranks among top three markets along with US and Europe in terms of sales.\n

\n\n\tOnePlus, which entered the Indian market in December 2014, had 11% market share in the Rs 15000-Rs 30000 price segment, and stood behind just Samsung and Apple until April, according to data provided by Singapore-based research firm Counterpoint.\n

\n\n\t“OnePlus has been growing steadily globally with sales driven mostly by European countries and India with India contributing almost one fourth of the sales​,” Tarun Pathak, senior analyst at Counterpoint said.\n

\n\n\t\"It has successfully positioned itself as premium flagship brand focusing on mid segment to high segment with a market share of 1% in India smartphone market in 2016 until April​.\" \n

\n\n\tPathak however said that the company might need one or two more product​s​ to cover the mid​-​ to high​-end price spectrum to generate volumes, at least in emerging countries.\n

\n\n\tWith the launch of OnePlus 3, the company is now selling four smartphones in India. It is still selling it first ever smartphone, OnePlus One​, at Rs 20,000. Agarwal said that the demand of old generation smartphones is still strong in India.\n

“We have reallocated stocks from other markets to India due to the demand of our OnePlus One smartphone,” he added. The company will soon begin local assembly of its flagship OnePlus 3 smartphone in India through its contact manufacturer Foxconn’s Andhra Pradesh facility, which is currently making the company’s most affordable OnePlus X smartphone. Foxconn has dedicated a capacity of 500,000 units per month for OnePlus “We are in middle of finalizing the process. The initial lot will be imported from China, but all future
devices<\/a> will be made in India,” Agarwal said.

\n\n\tThe Chinese firm has no intention to leverage the offline retail channel to sell its smartphones in India, and it will continue to sell its products through ecommerce firm Amazon.\n

\n\n\t“The costing for offline market is much higher. The price of a device can go up 30-40% in select circles, if offline retail route is taken. We have GST, which creates a tax arbitrage in different states, which can be as high as 10%, and for offline you need to do a lot of marketing. Being a new company, we don’t want to do that,” Agarwal explained.\n

\n\n\tFor offline, the company has established six experience zones, which also work as exclusive service centers in various cities. Besides, it is making its​ devices accessible at Idea Cellular retail stores for customer to experience them.\n

\n\n\tOnePlus is also focusing on building a localized testing and ROM team, which will eventually extend to become a full-fledged R&D team in future. “We have a small team for testing out the local apps and services on the ROM,” he said.\n

\n\n\tFor the new smartphone, OnePlus has tied-up with Idea Cellular and Saavn to offer double data benefits and free music streaming service, respectively, for 12 months. In addition, it is offering an additional accidental coverage for OnePlus 3 customers.\n

\n\n\tPriced at Rs 27,999, OnePlus 3 smartphone features a 5.5-inch full HD AMOLED display, 16-megapixel rear camera with 4K video capability and 8-megapixel rear camera.
