NEW DELHI: OneWeb, the global low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellite communication (satcom) company Wednesday inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tampnet to develop and trial connectivity solutions for the offshore sector.

The MoU will enable OneWeb to develop its low-latency, high-speed satcom connectivity capabilities and expand its customer base in the offshore sector.

Additionally, Tampnet will collaborate with OneWeb on a series of trials to test and evaluate network capabilities in the offshore energy environment.

This comes after OneWeb launched another 36 satellites from the Vostochny Cosmodrome on October 14, bringing the total in-orbit constellation to 358. The satcom company had, at the time said it is commencing service demonstrations to showcase hardware and other capabilities across various applications.

In an official statement issued today, OneWeb said the trials will initially focus on delivering services to offshore wind farms, rigs, and platforms in the North Sea from Q1 of 2022 and in the
Gulf of Mexico, later in 2022.

Once the service is fully online in 2023, Tampnet’s customers will benefit from OneWeb’s high-speed, low-latency, and flexible services.

The statement added that the companies have signed “all of the global energy companies” as clients, without naming them.
