NEW DELHI: Chinese smartphone maker Oppo Monday said it has set up a Camera Innovation lab at its Hyderabad R&D centre to develop localized features, camera solutions that use Artificial Intelligence (AI), and to focus on developing imaging software.
The lab will work to test phone cameras in artificially recreated scenes and analyze data produced from those samples.
The lab is equipped with specialized machines to test various light sources, across various photography/videography scenarios, and aims to improve device performance through optimizations to the camera technology, Oppo said in a statement.
It will also develop new imaging effects that will use AI algorithms, AI facial reconstruction, among others to enhance the application of beauty solutions, and will be tuned for the “Indian skin tones”.
Furthermore, the Hyderabad team will also be leading innovations for other countries, including the Middle East, Africa, South Asia, Japan, and Europe.
The lab will also work towards developing solutions for video, still photography, and research on Full Dimension Fusion (FDF) Portrait Video System technology, Oppo said.
This comes close on the heels of premium smartphone maker OnePlus' integration with Oppo to create “better products”.
Also, OnePlus and Oppo had last year integrated research and development teams in China after Pete Lau, co-founder of OnePlus, took additional responsibilities to oversee product strategy for both the brands.
“Imaging technology has always been a focal point of Oppo India R&D. With this lab set-up, while we work towards elevating the overall camera experience for our users, our focus is on localization of Global solutions and developing new solutions which can be globalized,” said Tasleem Arif, Vice President & Head, R&D Oppo India.
“The research and innovation in the imaging field at the lab aimed at changing the way people use their phones to record their lives. With the state-of-the-art equipment, we will tune and generate much realistic dataset and provide advance quality imaging and video shooting experience,” added Kaushal Prakash Sharma, Head, Camera Division, R&D Oppo India.
