Tasleem Arif, VP & head of R&D in Oppo India, says the centre has played a key role in its VOOC fast charging technology, in the globalization of its operating system ColorOS 7, and in its newest smartphone F15. “We have filed over 50 patents this year, 30% of which are in imaging and 20% in the network space,” he says.
This includes patents in the areas of camera and image processing, battery, networks (5G), system performance, payments, AI and gaming. “There are more patents in process,” Arif adds.
The latest version of VOOC, 3.0, which powers the Reno2 series, was developed in the centre here. Some key features of the F15, like Game Boost 3.0, Hyper Boost and Frame Boost technologies, were developed here. Hyper Boost delves deep into the handset’s performance to examine latency and control issues, as well as touch control and refresh rates to ensure games run smoothly, even in heavy loading scenarios. The optimised FPS (frames per second) is 38% higher. Average touch sensitivity rises by 16%, ensuring fast touch response even in low power conditions. Both these enable smoother game play.
Frame Boost 2.0 allocates resources to avoid the consumption of too much power and overheating of the phone, and Touch Boost 2.0 assesses touch events and accelerates response time, increasing general touch performance by 35.2%.
For the F15, which was recently launched in the Indian market, Oppo came up with localised technology innovations such as AI video beautification and a WiFi calling feature. “In the AI video beautification feature, which is applied in both the front and rear cameras, the software has been configured to capture and analyse Indian skin tones and features,” Arif says.
With the WiFi calling feature, users can make and answer calls even in low bandwidth areas, as long as they are connected to a WiFi network,” he explained.
The team has worked on local innovations like integrating the government’s DigiLocker service into ColorOS 7 and came up with a localised feature called DocVault that makes storing and retrieving documents like driving license and Aadhaar card simpler and faster.
Arif says Oppo is investing heavily on gathering consumer insights and working towards consumer centric innovations. The company has announced a $7 billion global investment in R&D over the next three years to develop core technologies in hardware, software and system, in addition to 5G, AI, augmented reality etc. “We have also allocated $143 million in 2020 for supporting developers across the globe to boost our operating ecosystem. As part of this, we plan to tap the potential of the Indian developer community this year to improve user experience, especially in the domain of 5G and AI,” Arif says.
By 2020, the Hyderabad centre expects to be 500 strong. “We have been hiring skilled resources from prestigious institutes like IIT, IIIT and NIT,” says Arif.
