\n\n\tNEW DELHI: Over the two decades, we’ve seen a huge spurt in mobile usage across the globe and telecom operators have endeavoured to address all segments of customer needs, serving almost half of the world’s population. In India alone, with over 870.19 million mobile connections and approximately 15.09 million broadband connections - mobile operators have striven to adapt and innovate. As technology continues to evolve, the mobile ecosystem has built new business models to deliver a variety of services that have gone beyond traditional core voice, SMS and data propositions and allowed users access to a growing rather of everyday devices via their phones in real-time.\n
\n\n\tJuxtaposed, is the rising traffic volumes, falling incomes, the difficulties of managing facility investment and the increasingly complex needs of the telecommunication environment. Driving the changes in traditional telecom data center architecture is the need for network operators to concentrate on their primary services priorities—content delivery, mobile services and cloud services. Mobile operators have long since deployed and operated large data centers to manage their businesses.\n
\n\n\tMany telecoms already possess large and distributed data centers that have been used for hosting and co-location services for many years. However, compared to cloud services, these have generally been expensive, closed and slow in service provisioning. As I see it, subject to differences in geographical markets, most telecoms are late in entering the cloud ecosystem that already offers agility, self-service, pay as you go and other cloud characteristics.\n
\n\n\tThe way forward – telecom operators have huge advantages, especially through existing, and often strong, customer relationship, billing expertise and customer services. All these are important for companies wanting to deploy cloud services in one way or another. And through their existing customer relationships, telecom operators can offer various bundling of cloud and telecom and\/or network services making it still more feasible for customers to retain and expand their business with their telecom service providers. We’re seeing industries that are moving cautiously to the cloud, including BFSI and the health care-sector.\n
\n\n\tWe see telecom operators’ move to embrace two pronged business models, they are embarking on a transformation of their internal support systems. This, in turn enables them to expose network assets and interfaces that can be exploited by such features as location and presence. Telecom service providers are party to a whole lot of customer attributes and can therefore embed these attributes (for example, user preferences and activities and analytics thereof) with third-party cloud offerings, enhancing their value by making them more relevant and meaningful to users. Or else, they can also embed these attributes with their own cloud offerings.\n
\n\n\tOn the other hand, cloud services, depend on network performance and would suffer without good connectivity within and between them. Managing cloud connectivity seems to be the most natural value-adding activity for telecom operators given their expertise in connecting and managing networks. Telecom operators are in a unique position to provide managed connectivity between cloud users and third-party providers, offering flexibility in network resources both in real-time and on-demand. While they enable users to switch cloud vendors without worrying about network-related details, they can also offer connectivity services according to pre-determined agreements and choose to employ network-based techniques, including caching, optimisation and data acceleration, to enhance the user experience of cloud applications. Telecom operators can therefore offer cloud services under a simple pricing structure that includes connectivity and devices, self-service provisioning, on-demand infrastructure hardware, as well as front- and back-office applications. They can also provide value-added services, including analytics and reporting, predictive capacity planning, and managed services.\n
The Cloud business<\/a> is evolving to be more than just connecting IT resources and services. The next wave will address the specific needs of vertical industries such as healthcare, education, retail and government. This will result in increasing amounts of data being accumulated from outside the cloud, and the growing need to integrate services and processes will require a wider range of sensors and devices to be linked with an Operator’s Cloud.
\n\n\tFinally, given the nature of the business telecom operators can play a significant role in the evolving cloud ecosystem, ranging from enabling cloud infrastructure to becoming full-service providers of both public and private clouds to aggregators of end-to-end cloud-based applications and services. And more importantly, they can offer value added services to all their customers, from consumers and small businesses to the largest corporations and organizations, in virtually any market across India. The success formula in the cloud, however, will require strong strategy and the ability to assure customers that data sovereignty is a certainty across a variety of customer requirements coupled with a willingness to partner with other cloud players to fill out the offerings that make up those plans. To end, as we see it – now is the time to act and capture the market.\n
