HCL Technologies on Wednesday said that despite client spending on technology remaining largely flat, it is bullish on the growth environment. In an interview to ET’s Surabhi Agarwal, C Vijayakumar, CEO, HCL Technologies, said that the company’s strategy of optimising the traditional spend for clients and offering new propositions in emerging technologies is what is working for them.

How do you look at the overall demand environment given the current pressures on industries?

Overall, if you look at any analyst commentary, client spend is at best the same or marginally increasing. There is pressure on some of the commodity or traditional services, but the savings that the clients make on the traditional services, they are reinvesting in the next generation services. This is where our Mode 2 (emerging technologies) services are perfectly placed. The overall spend is constant, if you have the right proposition in Mode 2 and have the right capability to bring in the optimisation in Mode 1(traditional services), then I think it provides a positive outlook to what we can deliver for our clients. Over the last few quarters, our client additions and metrics on all the categories of clients has been very impressive. It’s our strategy which is helping and it is also very sharply focused on client spends. And we are really there, where the clients’ spend is.

You mentioned that second half of the current fiscal will be better than the first half, what makes you so optimistic?

It is because our booking has been better than what it was last year that is what is going to drive it. That booking is broad-based, applications services is almost double, infrastructure services booking also looks good; so all of that will drive growth.

Which geographies and verticals drove growth in the last quarter for HCL?
Europe grew almost 4.4% and a lot of Europe growth has been contributed by financial services, US grew 1.2%. But that is on the back of 3.6% in the previous quarter. And RoW degrew 12% primarily because of $20-million dip in the India
business.

India business has been a drag for you. What is the overall strategy there?

We wanted to be more selective in where we wanted to participate and some large projects came to a logical conclusion in the previous quarter, so once the project concludes the revenues will go down, there may be a little more reduction in next quarter but a big part of it is already baked in this quarter numbers and whatever reduction is expected in the next quarter is already baked in our guidance.

In an interview to ET, C Vijayakumar, CEO, HCL Technologies, said that the company's strategy of optimising the traditional spend for clients is working for them.
["HCL","C Vijayakumar","HCL Technologies","Business","industry
telecomnews/our-focus-on-client-spends-is-working-hcl-ceo-c-vijayakumar"}}" data-authors="[" surabhi agarwal"]" data-category-name="" data-category_id="" data-date="2017-10-26" data-index="article_1">
