Bengaluru: Mobile commerce platform Paytm<\/a> is planning to launch a travel marketplace on the lines of Alitrip, the travel marketplace run by Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba Group<\/a> in its home market.<\/p>\n

Noida-based Paytm, which is in advanced discussions with the Alibaba Group to raise $600 million (about 3,840 crore), has roped in Satish Mani, co-founder and chief technology officer of online fashion retailer Zovi<\/a>, to develop the marketplace business.<\/p>\n

\n\t\"Our approach is to build an Alitrip kind of business in India,\" said Vijay Shekhar Sharma, co-founder & CEO of Paytm. The company wants to enter newer categories to grow its gross merchandise value, or the total amount of goods sold on the platform, to $3-4 billion (up to 25,600 crore) by the end of 2015, from its current run rate of $1.5 billion ( 9,600 crore).<\/p>\n

\n\tIndia's online travel market was estimated to be worth over $8 billion ( 51,200 crore) in 2014, according to Internet & Mobile Association of India.<\/p>\n

\n\t\"We are building a digital commerce business of new categories to counter scale of physical commerce and logistics,\" said Sharma. The plan is to start signing up hotels and travel agents on the platform from next month.<\/p>\n

\n\tMeanwhile, Mani will continue to work with Zovi. \"Satish will continue at Zovi but he has some bandwidth to help us build this,\" said Sharma. Before starting Zovi in 2011, Mani was senior vice president of technology at online travel booking site Cleartrip.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn October last year, Alibaba spun off its travel websites into Alitrip to consolidate services including hotel booking, flight booking and packaged tours. Paytm is looking to model its travel platform on Alitrip.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe marketplace will give vendors the ability to bid for different services that customers want. For instance, a user wanting to travel from Delhi to Chandigarh in a taxi will not only be able to get multiple bids from taxi service providers but also from hotels along the way.<\/p>\n

\n\tHotels, travel agents and other service providers will be able to put up their inventory using a do-it-yourself platform provided by Paytm. Consumers will be able to avail themselves of these services through the Paytm app, which has been downloaded nearly 30 million times so far. \"The US concept is one app for one thing. The Chinese concept is one app for many things. We believe that Indians will follow the Chinese,\" said Sharma.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn bus ticketing, the company competes with redBus, market leader. \"redBus is now easily 10 times the size of nearest competition versus 6x at time of acquisition,\" Ashish Kashyap, the CEO of ibiboGroup, which owns redBus, told ET in an earlier email.<\/p>\n

According to a Google<\/a> report, by 2016 nearly 8.4 million Indian users will book hotels online, generating revenues upwards of $1.8 billion. Google said that between 2011 and 2014, search queries on smartphones for hotels grew nearly 30 times.<\/p>\n

Nearly 81,525 crore worth of digital commerce happened in India in 2014, out of which 50,050 crore was in the online travel segment, according to the IMAI.
