\nNEW DELHI: The Prime Minister’s Office is expected to receive a detailed presentation Thursday on the progress of the much-delayed BharatNet<\/a> project, earlier called the Bharat Broadband<\/a> Network, which is critical to the government’s ambitious Digital India programme, a person familiar with the matter said.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>

\n\t \n\t“There will be a detailed project presentation with the PMO<\/a> officials who will review the BharatNet initiative tomorrow (Thursday),” the official, who is aware of the matter, said.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \n\tBharatNet is the Centre’s ambitious program that seeks to connect 2.5 lakh gram panchayats or village blocks with optic-fibre-based network to offer Internet services in rural and remote India that could facilitate an access to an array of government-to-citizen services.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \n\tPlagued with challenges such as the right of way (RoW), the initiative conceived in 2011 by UPA-II government, has been marred by delays. Approved by the Cabinet on October 2011, the mega initiative first missed the initial December 2013 completion deadline and later it was revised to December 2016.
