NEW DELHI: Handset maker Poco, which last year spun off from parent Xioami as a separate entity, has no immediate plans to go mass market with its smartphones and is currently focusing on tech-savvy customers in India. The company is also going slow on product category expansion and will not launch any non-smartphone product this year.

This comes at a time when the brand is going through a leadership change with general manager C. Manmohan stepping down from the position. He, however, will stay with the company till December-end.

"Poco is still a very small team. We will become a big team going next year. We are working on how the organisation would look...what products are needed and ensuring what our core strategy is," Anuj Sharma, the former Xiaomi CMO who now heads Poco India, told ET.

"Even if we want to, we would not be able to tap everyone since we are a small team. Our target audience is someone who is interested in tech. It is a little niche but is big enough for Poco," he added.

He, however, said that the brand is on track to meet its targets for the 2020 calendar year despite suffering an impact on sales due to lockdown earlier this year. "We just had one product but we saw a strong response for our phones."

China's Xiaomi started the Poco brand in 2018 with the launch of the Poco F1
smartphone, featuring high-end specifications at around Rs 20,000. However, the departure of the head of product of the POCO division, Jai Mani, derailed its plan in 2019.

The company revived the brand early this year with the launch of Poco X2 in February, and subsequently launched X and M series.

As per Counterpoint Research, Poco maintained its strong performance in online channels in Q2 2020 with X2 being the second-highest shipped model on Flipkart.

Poco X series operates in the sub- Rs 20,000 segment, while M series targets customers in the Rs 10,000-Rs 15,000 segment. The F series, however, will be its flagship series and will target Rs 27,000-Rs 33,000 segment.

Asked why Poco didn't launch the phone in Indian Sharma said that the timing wasn't good for the phone in India as the nation was going through a lockdown. "Market for a Rs 40,000 phone is already small and Poco isn't a known brand with no marketing budget..it was tough for us and the 400 euros price point is apt for the European market."

"We are testing waters with our flagship series," Sharma added.

"Since its inception, brand Poco has yielded a mixed bag of results in terms of its market performance. In a hyper-competitive market, POCO must seek to get its market positioning and value proposition right to get consumer buy-in, and endeavour to potentially further its brand success," Prabhu Ram, Head - Industry Intelligence Group, CMR told ET.

Sharma said that the brand is heading in the "right direction", but it doesn't want to pick up too many products to expand its portfolio. "We want to get the right product, audio seems simple but it is...we were not happy with the progress we were making on this front.

Poco has gotten into an agreement with its parent brand for R&D, procurement and after-sales to support its operations in India. However, it is still in a process of getting the legal entity setup in India, Mannohan informed.

"We are in process of making it happen. It is taking more time. Steps are being taken to set up different teams and operations. Getting the legal entity is taking time but we will get there soon," Manmohan added.

Sharma said that he will implement his Xiaomi India experience to grow the Poco brand. "Community development and user feedback is something we want to strengthen. Besides, I want to implement my experience with the Razer brand around gaming for Poco.'
