Pokemon<\/a> fanboys. \"The USP of Pokémon game was the fight with the Pokemon<\/a> before catching it,\" said 22-year-old Mohammed Zeeshan, a student of New York University, who has been playing Pokemon games for a decade now.

\nLabelling the latest game a 'disappointment', Zeeshan said, traditionally, Pokemon games have an element of combat. In a classic Pokemon game, users have to battle wild Pokemon and lower its health before capturing it.

\"In
Pokemon Go<\/a>, you just have to hurl pokeballs<\/a> to collect Pokemons. It is pointless to throw pokeballs<\/a> and catch them, if the creature goes down without a fight,\" said Zeeshan. Old-time gamers of Pokemon also contend that the dumbing down has made the game trivial.
\n
\n\"It doesn't matter if it's a rare Pokemon or not, (in Pokemon Go) one has to just flick pokeballs over and over again until you catch it,\" said Aneesh Thunga, a 22-year-old software tester who has been playing Pokemon games since its release in the Game Boy Advanced console in 2001.

Pokemon has a long history in the annals of gaming. The first Pokemon game was released in 1996, and has spanned over eight generations of handheld gaming consoles — from the Gameboy to
Nintendo<\/a> DS — and is now available in smartphones.

\nOne of the striking features of Niantic-developed Pokemon Go is the 'gym battle'. Pokemon gyms are real-world places where trainers can deploy their Pokemon to battle with other trainers to become gym leader. However, Pokemon purists argue that the battles in Pokemon Go are 'ineffectual' compared with the earlier installments of the game.

\n\"In earlier versions, as the Pokemons level up and gain experience, they learn new moves which make the battle more challenging. In Pokemon Go, you are stuck with what you get,\" said Zeeshan, adding that the lack of moves restricts the narrative of the game.

\nIn the older versions of the game, each Pokemon had an assortment of moves based on its battle experience. Also, gamers could strategically choose moves during battle depending on the type of Pokemon — water type, wind type, fire type — they are fighting against.

\n\"One had to pick moves which are effective against the opposite type. A lot more thinking and reasoning comes into play in the older version,\" said Aneesh, adding that fighting and defending the gym feels automated in Pokemon Go. \"The game is made for the masses rather than true to its fans,\" Aneesh added.

Gaming industry watchers though dismiss such quibbles. \"People want to go to all the places they never wanted to, because they want to catch a Pokemon,\" said Alok Kejriwal, chief executive officer,
Games2win<\/a>. \"So, who cares about some theoretical tick marks which are not there?
