NEW DELHI: Union Minister of Communications Ashwini Vaishnaw has said that the government is concerned over the delay by Vodafone Idea in raising funds, according to a Financial Express report. The struggling telco has not been able to secure either equity infusion from its promoters, or get funding from investors.

“Of course, there is a concern because investment is supposed to come. And only after investment, the company can revive. Everyone is concerned,” Vaishnaw told the publication, adding that government is constantly “encouraging the promoters” to invest in the company.

In February this year, the Centre converted Vodafone Idea’s interest dues worth Rs 16,123 crore into equity, following assurance from the promoters that they will invest in the company. Recently,
Aditya Birla Group chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla joined the telco’s board, reigniting hopes that the telco’s fundraising efforts will accelerate.

Vodafone Group Plc, which holds a 32% stake in Vodafone Idea in FY23 earnings statement did not indicate that the company will further invest in its Indian telecom JV with the Aditya Birla Group. The British telecom group also said that it is not recording further losses related to Vodafone Idea.

The Centre is currently the largest stakeholder in Vodafone Idea with a 33.4% stake, while the Aditya Birla Group holds 18%, as per the report.

The delay in funding is also delaying Vodafone Idea’s 5G network launch at a time when its rivals
Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are aggressively deploying 5G network in cities/towns across the country. India has now 2,00,000 5G sites.

“We continue to remain engaged with our lenders for further debt fundraising as well as with other parties for equity or equity-linked fund raising, to make required investments for network expansion, including 5G rollout,”
Akshaya Moondra, chief executive, Vodafone Idea, said in the telco’s earnings statement Thursday.
