While there have been very few instances, the UIDAI<\/a> has implemented a two-layer authentication system to ensure that the originality of the fingerprints is captured in a more foolproof manner. The artificial intelligence-based security mechanism, which was developed in-house, captures both the fingerprint image and finger minutia, or the major features of a fingerprint image.
A source at the agency that manages Aadhaar said that the feature, which was fully implemented last month after months of discussion and testing, came amid some concerns that silicon imprints may have been used in some places for bogus authentication. Besides, there were concerns that fingerprints available with land registration records may be misused for the purpose.
Fingerprint-based authentication is widely used by banks and telecom companies, as well as state and central government agencies for recording attendance in offices. These agencies have had to move to a different set of machines for the purpose, which required at least a year of testing, an official said. The new technique has also helped in reducing the time taken for the authentication process - from around 400 milliseconds to 200-250 milliseconds.
Officials said that given the massive scale of Aadhaar with total registrations adding up to over 135 crore, the number of such breaches noticed will be very few, an official said, arguing that government agencies have also been sensitized about not making fingerprints public, as was the case with land records in certain states.
