NEW DELHI: India will be in a position to develop a fully indigenous sixth-generation or 6G technology stack by the end of this decade, said Minister of State for Communication Devusinh Chauhan Wednesday.

Prime Minister
Narendra Modi early Wednesday launched the ‘Bharat 6G’ vision document and a 6G testbed to drive innovation and R&D on the next-generation network technology.

“In recent years, India has undertaken several initiatives to address the challenges of digital divide. Out of the total 640,000 villages in India, more than 600,000 villages have already been provided with 4G mobile coverage, the remaining villages will be covered by December 2023. The government has also been extending fibre to every village in the country. Around 190,000 villages have optical fiber connectivity, remaining villages will be covered by 2025,” said Chauhan.

The minister said in a keynote address at the India Telecom 2023 event jointly organised by the
Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Telecom Equipment and Services Export Promotion Council (TEPC).

“India has assumed the presidency of G20…India will be more than happy to cooperate in the field of advanced telecom technology, share best practices in bridging the digital divide and several other areas,” said Chauhan.

Union Minister of Communications Ashwini Vaishnaw said that various sectors in India are now developing technologies, as against being a consumer of technologies earlier.

“Today, we are in a position where India is confidently developing products, developing technologies, and taking bigger challenges. This spirit is reflected in sector after sector. Take the case of defense, take the case of steel, railways, or renewable energy,” said Vaishnaw. “That's one major mindset shift, which has happened in the last eight years.”

He noted that the regulation of digital economies has to be different from the earlier economy which was not heavily reliant on digital technologies.

“...there are certain horizontals and then there are certain verticals. The horizontals are telecom and data privacy, these cut across all the verticals. So we decided to frame our regulatory sector in a way that basically makes technology-agnostic horizontals and technology-focused verticals,” the telecom minister said.

“We are rewriting our rules and we are rewriting our regulations for the digital economy. Our focus is to make sure that the horizontals are technology agnostic, they are dynamic, and they are capable of changing with the changing technologies. They are inclusive,” he added.

He also said India has been a leader in software development for some time now, and it is gaining prominence as a hardware manufacturer, adding that it is an opportune time for the country to emerge as a manufacturer of high-quality, reliable and trusted products.

“...some of the products are today exported to about 55 countries, including the United States of America. That's the goal. To make this work, we must establish ourselves as a country an area or region, which manufactures high-quality, reliable and trusted products,” he said.
