Similarly, television sales during the Diwali period tripled as compared to the period before and the growth was led by the pricier ultra-high definition models, GfK data showed. Demand for large-screen televisions (more than 43-inch) remained high, contributing one-third of the category sale - which is also a new peak as per the market researcher.
In cars, midsize and premium SUVs priced above 10 lakh like Maruti Suzuki<\/a> Grand Vitara<\/a>, Hyundai Creta, Tata Harrier, Mahindra XUV700 drove sales during this Diwali season when the passenger vehicle segment reported highest-to-date retail sales of 375,000-385,000 units, as per leading manufacturers.
In the luxury car market, sales have grown 40% this year and there is an order backlog of about 10,000-12,000 units after strong festive bookings, industry officials said. Overall pending orders are for 900,000 cars, with the highest waiting period for pricier models like XUV700, Scorpio and Creta, which ranges between 6-24 months, they said.
To be sure, there was a surge in sales of entry-level electronic products, hatchback cars and two-wheelers as well during Diwali, but it was a minor one. \"Consumers who buy premium and super premium (electronic products priced above Rs 1 lakh) are less vulnerable to inflation,\" said LG India vice president Deepak Bansal. \"Also, there is a natural surge in customer preference for upgrading lifestyle,\" he said.
Anant Jain, head of market intelligence - India at GfK, said the industry continues to see the premiumisation trend against all odds. \"This can be attributed to hybrid working conditions, consumers' preference towards smart and sustainable products offering convenience and comfort, and availability due to better last-mile reach,\" he said.
LG's Bansal said brands played an important part in driving premiumisation and upselling to tap changing consumer preference by offering lucrative consumer offers on the high end. \"It has been an effort by all brands to increase value business since overall volumes have been under pressure,\" he said.
A senior auto industry executive said demand for small cars remains weak with affordability hit at the entry level amid a spike in prices. However, sales remain robust at the upper end of the market where customers have higher disposable incomes and, therefore, better ability to absorb the price shocks, the person said.
