The state government will unveil public wifi hotspots in Bengaluru on the upcoming Republic Day and will gradually introduce and expand the service in 11 municipal corporations over two months.

Bengaluru will have about 5,000 public hotspots before the Assembly elections. Information technology minister Priyank Kharge has been pushing for an early rollout of the public internet service and is confident of wide acceptance.

The expression of interest (EoI) called by the government has received good response from private
internet service providers (ISPs), Kharge told ET. The last day to respond to EoI was Tuesday.

Citizens will get to use the public
wifi free for the first 30 minutes. They will have to pay the commercial rates, as fixed by TRAI, for using the service beyond the free minutes. Four companies — Indus Towers, Honeycomb, D-VoiS Communications and ACT Fibernet — have expressed interest to provide public wifi hotspots. Indus Towers has offered to set up 173 smart poles in municipal corporations all over Karnataka with 140 of them in Bengaluru.

Honeycomb and D-VoiS have offered to install hotspots at 2,555 locations each in Benglauru, Mysuru and Kalaburagi. ACT Fibernet has offered to build
wifi hotspots at 1,000 spots in Benglauru and Mysuru.

Chief minister
Siddaramaiah hails from Mysuru while Kharge represents Kalaburagi district. He has pushed for public wifi service in all municipal corporation limits in the state on the grounds that it does not make sense to limit the service only to Bengaluru.

The Information Technology Fepartment is evaluating the offers made by the four companies and will issue approvals in the next few days, according to the minister. The government will give them three months after granting approvals for the complete rollout as committed by them. If any of them fail, the government will cancel the bids and call for fresh expressions. The service providers will have to pay a rent for their installations at public places.

The government had been planning to offer public wifi hotspots in Bengaluru for sometime now but it always ran into trouble for one reason or the other. The project gained momentum after Kharge took over.

“We have adopted the present model after studying how various cities have introduced public wifi hotspots. The model that we are implementing will not entail any cost to the government,” Kharge said.

Bengaluru zips ahead with giga broadband speed

The city on Wednesday joined the elite league of Hong Kong, Singapore and Seoul with the launch of 1 Gbps (1,000 Mbps) wired broadband internet service by internet service provider ACT Fibernet. Hyderabad is another city where the Bengaluru-based firm introduced the service in March. Karnataka’s IT minister
Priyank Kharge launched the service and said the giga city tag that Bengaluru has now acquired with this service will further strengthen the city’s position as a true global city. “Bengaluru has been most adaptable to digital change and has always been in the forefront of technology and innovation,” he said. He mentioned that about 6,000 startups have registered with the state government and there are about 700 incubation seats in Bengaluru. He urged the ACT to offer 1 Gbps service to these startups and incubation centres, besides the government offices in Vidhana Soudha and Bangalore One citizen centres at a special discount rate. CEO Bala Malladi and agreed to provide a discount to the cost price of the service. “With future-ready technology and extensive fibre broadband connectivity, we believe we are a disruptor in the Indian broadband industry,” said Malladi. In the election year of 2004, John Kerry, then a Democrat hopeful, had called Bengaluru a completely-wired city. “If Bangalore in India can be completely wired, then so should all of America.” In that US election campaign, internet connectivity was a major campaign issue.
